BUTLER TWP — One more chance.

That's what Butler's football game at Seneca Valley Friday night comes down to. Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.

The Golden Tornado (0-8, 0-4) have been trying to schedule a 10th game but have no takers so far.

"I've called four teams. A couple are still on the bubble in terms of playoffs, but it's not looking good," Butler coach Jeff McAnallen said.

Butler might get senior tight end Brian Jendesky back after suffering a concussion. He didn't practice Monday, but he has been cleared to return.

Jendesky is the Tornado's leading receiver with 19 catches for 241 yards.

The Butler Eagle Traveling Trophy will go to the winning team Friday night. Seneca Valley (4-4, 2-2) has won it the past two years, including an 18-14 triumph last season.

"We're expecting another close game this year," McAnallen said. "We want to keep it close in the fourth quarter and give ourselves a chance to win it.

"Seeing these kids being able to grab that trophy after this game — it'd be great to see. It's all we have to play for right now. Every kid we put on that field will be playing hard. We're getting after it as a team."

Butler's last three games haven't been close. Losses to Pine-Richland, North Hills and North Allegheny have come by a combined 109-12 score.

McAnallen met with his seniors Saturday while the sophomores and juniors were playing a junior varsity game.

"I'm just trying to build them back up," the coach said. "They've been through all this before as sophomores. They're having a rough time right now."

Injuries and players quitting during the year have cut Butler's senior roster from 22 to 14. Overall, the Tornado have 49 players remaining from the 77 who reported to camp in August.

The freshman team numbers have dwindled as well — from 73 to begin the season to 45 now.

"Our numbers don't lie. We need kids who start the season to finish the season," McAnallen said. "When an upperclassman quits because he's not starting and a starting player goes down with an injury later, that kid is missing his chance.

"We've had to throw some junior varsity players out there who simply aren't ready yet."

Cole Harvey and Jordan Lumley will continue to see time at quarterback Friday night. Harvey has only three touchdown passes and Jake Thompson is Butler's leading rusher with 266 yards and five TDs.

Seneca Valley quarterback Donny Holl has thrown for more than 1,000 yards. He's got four receivers — Andrew Smith, Pete Vicente, Jordan Glaser and Mike Martin — with 10 or more catches.

Jack Graham is the Raiders' leading rusher with only 219 yards.

"When you've got a 6-foot-3 quarterback who can throw or run the ball, the spread offense is effective and that's what they use," McAnallen said. "They've gotten better and better at it."

Butler offensive lineman San Santoro and cornerback Derek Lenhart were the Butler Quarterback Club's Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week against North Allegheny.
