IN BRIEF

SAN FRANCISCO — Sue Burns, a part owner of the San Francisco Giants and devoted philanthropist who was close friends with home run king Barry Bonds, died. She was 58.

Burns died early Sunday of complications from cancer, the team said. She was diagnosed with the disease July 10 and missed Jonathan Sanchez's no-hitter for the Giants that night — a rare absence from the ballpark. Burns attended a game against San Diego the previous day.

The Burns family was largely responsible for keeping the Giants in the Bay Area in 1992 rather than relocating to Florida.

SAO PAULO — An autopsy indicates former boxing champion Arturo Gatti may have committed suicide, been accidentally killed or murdered, according to a Brazilian newspaper that said it obtained a copy of the coroner's initial findings.Police have said they are certain Gatti's 23-year-old wife strangled the boxer with her purse strap as he drunkenly slept July 11, but the autopsy report raises some doubts. In the state capital of Recife, the Jornal do Comercio newspaper reported Saturday that the autopsy findings it obtained stated Gatti's body was "suspended and hanged, indicating he may have committed suicide."

MADRID — Seve Ballesteros said he would like to play in the British Open at St. Andrews in 2010.Spurred by images of longtime rival Tom Watson playing his way to the 54-hole lead at the British Open at Turnberry, Ballesteros added that he would relish playing the 18th hole at the same venue that saw him triumph over the 59-year-old American in the 1984 tournament.Ballesteros, who underwent four operations on a malignant brain tumor late last year, said he would like to be able to play in next year's championship as a gesture of gratitude to his British fans who have supported him.

STATELINE, Nev. — Defending champion Rick Rhoden led all day but had to hold on at the end to claim a record eighth victory at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship after rival Dan Quinn's comeback attempt ended with a shot into the pond guarding the 18th hole.Rhoden, the 56-year-old former All-Star pitcher, shot a 2-over 74 Sunday that was good enough to claim the $125,000 winner's check at the 20th annual golf tournament at Edgewood-Tahoe Golf Course, holding off late charges by the ex-hockey player Quinn, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and ex-quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver.

OKLAHOMA CITY — Ashley Hansen clubbed a grand slam and Jennie Finch threw a two-hit shutout as the U.S. advanced to the World Cup of Softball championship game with a 8-0 win against Australia on Sunday.Despite having 10 rookies on the roster, the United States has hardly been challenged so far at the World Cup. The Americans have outscored opponents 48-3 and won three of their five games by the mercy rule.
