Principal pushes for curriculum changes
ADAMS TWP — Two advanced language classes could be added at Mars High School next year, and physical education classes could be taken every other year.
Principal Todd Kolson on Tuesday night made his recommendations to the school board regarding curriculum changes for the 2016-17 school year.
Kolson recommended that advanced-placement French and advanced-placement German be added to the course selection at the high school.
He said the AP French course would be administered by the Intermediate Unit IV, which offers the class online.
He said the district now has French I, II, III and IV. Adding the AP French would allow students the same offerings in Spanish and French, Kolson said.
The cost to add AP French would be $620 per student, and Kolson said if a student dropped the course after a certain tryout period, parents must reimburse the district that amount.
Kolson also recommended adding AP German, which would be administered by Oklahoma State University. He explained that the intermediate unit does not offer AP German.
He said the cost for the online AP German course would be $320 per student.
Kolson also recommended that the school’s physical education requirement be reduced so that students must take PE once during their freshman or sophomore year, and again during their junior or senior year.
Kolson said while the current requirement of one semester of PE per year between grades nine and 12 carries two credits, the new setup would reduce the class credit to 1.2. He said electives would be added to make up the missing credit points.
The program in which students carrying a heavy academic load can use independent study for their PE credit would continue if the new program is approved, Kolson said.
Students would still be able to take PE every year during high school if they so choose, he said.
Kolson said district growth prompted the recommendation. He said requiring two instead of four PE classes during the high school years would also preclude the district from having to hire another PE teacher.
“With our increased student enrollment, class sizes are getting a little crazy,” Kolson said.
Kolson said he will survey students regarding potential electives, and share his recommended electives with the board in January.
He also recommended the board delete technology and communications II due to lack of student interest.
The board took no action on the recommendations on Tuesday.
