WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - There soon will be another brother act in the Butler Area Sports Hall of Fame.

Bob Quigley, who owned the boys basketball scoring record at Butler High for 25 years, will be one of the seven inductees into the Hall at the 44th annual banquet April 25 at the Butler Days Inn.

Quigley's brother, Bill, was inducted in 1998 for his football exploits.

"I think Bill was more excited than I was when we got the news I was going in," Quigley said. "I have a good brother. He's a good guy."

And Bob Quigley was a good basketball player.

A 1961 Butler graduate, he scored 898 career points for the Golden Tornado, breaking Bill Saul's scoring record. Quigley's mark stood until 1986.

"I never returned to live in Butler once I got out of college," Quigley said. "I've been down in Florida for 32 years.

"When I found out my record was broken, I sent the guy a watch as a congratulatory gift. Because of some recruiting rule, he wasn't allowed to accept it, but Billy gave the watch to him years later."

Quigley averaged 20.2 points per game as a junior in 1959-60 and 15 points per game his senior year.

"He was only 5-foot-11, but he played pivot on the team," said Ed Wadding, Hall president, schoolmate and friend of Quigley. "Bob was always outsized under the basket, but knew how to position himself and draw fouls."

Quigley said he grew up playing under the basket and never knew another position.

"I was 5-11 when I was 11 years old," he said, laughing. "I towered above everybody else. Then I stopped growing."

But he never stopped being aggressive. Quigley sank 161 of 210 free throws his junior year, attempting an average of 9.5 free throws per game, and converted 96 of 144 free throws his senior year.

"I played aggressively," he said. "I drove to the basket whenever I could. I got knocked around a lot, but it paid off for the team."

"Bob set foul-shooting records for that time at Butler, he got to the line so often," Wadding said.

By the time Quigley's high school basketball career was through, he held the school record for 298 converted free throws. His 300 field goals were second on Butler's all-time list.

He scored 449 points his junior year, fourth on the Tornado's list for one season's production. The 777 points he scored as a junior and senior were second on the list for most points scored in a two-year period and his 420 free throw attempts were second-most all-time.

Quigley went on to play at Clarion State College, but he competed for only two seasons.

"I got tired of it," he admitted. "There was even a bigger disparity in size between myself and the pivots I faced.

"I wasn't as effective inside anymore and I had no outside game because I never played out there."

Quigley also played a year of football as an offensive and defensive end at Butler. He coached Little League baseball off and on for eight years.

He also was a catcher in summer baseball for a number of years.
