Butler crushed by Cathedral Prep, 58-7
ERIE — The Butler football team knows it will need to come out more focused next time it makes a trip up Interstate 79 in two weeks.
The Golden Tornado dropped a 58-7 decision to Cathedral Prep on Friday night at Dollinger Field.
Butler wide receiver Braylon Littlejohn recorded Butler's only touchdown, a nine-yard reception in the third quarter from quarterback Mac Schnur. That score helped the Tornado lessen its deficit to 30-7 before the Ramblers closed the game with 28 unanswered points.
The Golden Tornado (3-4, 0-2) will make a return trip to Erie on Oct. 29. That contest, against Erie, will be an unofficial playoff game for the right to play McDowell in the District 10 Class 6A championship game.
“This loss has got to wake our guys up,” said Butler coach Eric Christy. “They've got to focus and realize what it's like to play football in Erie. It's all good teams. They all play hard. Erie High is going to be just like that, so we've got to be ready to go.”
Schnur was 10 of 18 for 128 yards. Littlejohn made five receptions for 49 yards and Lance Slater finished with four for 88.
Cathedral Prep quarterback Carter Barnes accounted for four touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground. He completed 6 of 12 passes for 109 yards. Barnes also had nine rushes for 71 yards.
Running back Michael Parks had 18 carries for one touchdown and fellow back Suhtaun Lewis totaled five carries for 89 yards and one TD.
The host Ramblers had not played in two weeks, and were coming off a loss to rival McDowell.
“They are a great team,” Christy said. “We knew that coming in. They came out focused. They looked like they were hungry to get on the field. They were ready and we weren't.”
After Cathedral Prep took a 30-0 into intermission, Butler finally found a rhythm on its opening drive of the second half.
On the touchdown, Schnur moved to his right and found Littlejohn, who ran the ball inside the pylon.
“We were making adjustments to what (Cathedral Prep) was doing and guys made some plays,” Christy said.
Cathedral Prep quickly snagged momentum back after that. When the Golden Tornado found ways to move their offense, the battle of attrition took its toll.
“We bounced some personnel guys in and out, guys who were dinged a little bit, and that kind of stalled some drives,” Christy said. “When we started moving the ball, we were missing this guy, that guy. No excuses. The next guy has got to be able to step up.”
