Butler wrestlers win Virginia Duals
Butler’s wrestling team improved to 13-0 on the season by winning the American Division of the Virginia Duals over the weekend in Hampton, Va.
The Golden Tornado defeated three state-ranked teams on their way to the title — No. 8 Cox (61-18) No. 5 Riverbend (39-26) and No. 2 Great Bridge (41-26). They topped Great Bridge in the championship match.
Butler began the tourney with an 84-0 win over Kempsville.
Levi Donnel went 4-0 for the weekend — including a win over a defending Virginia State champion — to reach 100 wins for his career. Also going 4-0 for Butler were Santino Sloboda, Ana Malovich, Kase Chopp, Landon Christie and Ethan Babay.
Butler hosts Mars on Wednesday.
Knoch competed in the Valley Duals on Saturday, going 3-2 to capture third place. The Knights dropped a 42-33 decision to Albert Gallatin, bounced back to defeat Riverview 54-24 and South Park, 48-30. Knoch dropped a 42-30 decision to Valley and defeated Summit Academy, 52-18.
Wyatt Foster, Matt Frank and Miranda Lajevic all went 5-0 on the day for the Knights. Owen Layhew, Tanner Crowe and Brad McGowan went 4-1.
Indoor Track and Field
Butler junior Drew Griffith ran at the Virginia Beach Showcase with other elite runners over the weekend and placed fourth in the 3,200 meters with a time of nine minutes and seven seconds. That time is second on the Golden Tornado’s all-time indoor record list, trailing only C.J. Sigleton’s 9:02.23.
The Golden Tornado competed in an indoor meet Friday at at Edinboro University. Megan Baggetta won the triple jump with a leap of 36 feet,. 3 inches. Gracie Nichols was third in the high jump, Evie Paserba fourth in the pole vault.
Carlie Baker was fifth in the shot put, Adraya Baxter sixth in the 60-meter hurdles, Rylie Jack eighth in the 200. Butler’s distance medley relay team of Makayla McLister, Ava Brewster, Amelia Turner and Lyla Bowden took fourth while the 4x200 relay of Maura Penrod, Jack, Baxter and Lauren Bowden placed sixth.
On the boys side, Landon Lacey won the 400 meters in 52.06 seconds. Luke Campbell took first in the long jump at 21-6, second in the high jump at 6-1. The 4x400 relay of Aaron Stebick, Drew Knight, Zachary Slear and Lacey won the 4x400 relay in 3:39.05..
Owen Dressler took third in the 1,600 meters and seventh in the 800, Markeis Frazier fourth in the shot put, Slear fourth in the 800 and Knight fifth in the 800.
Slippery Rock traveled to Youngstown State University for a meet. Aiva Reich placed third in the girls 60-meter hurdles in 10.26 seconds. Dustin Joyce placed fourth and fifth in the triple and long jumps, respectively.
Zach Hoehn was fifth in the shot put. Tyler Arblaster placed sixth in the boys 400 meters, setting a school indoor record time of 52.74 seconds. He also broke the school’s indoor markin the 200 with a 23.70.
Swimming
Slippery Rick’s girls placed first out of 20 teams competing in the Jefferson High School Falcon Invitational held Saturday at SPIRE Institute. The Rocket boys placed eighth out of 19 teams.
The girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Season Grant, Ann-Katherine Burns, Natalie Double and Gracie Olshanski swam a school-record time of 1 minute, 42.36 seconds, a reduction of 1.64 seconds off the previous mark set eight years ago. Winning individual and relay events for the Rockets on the day were Mollie Massella (four times), Burns, Double and Olshanski (three times each) and Grant.
On the boys side, Cody Hartle in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly, Connor Wallace in the 50 and 100 freestyle, Kevin Bowser in the 50 freestyle and backstroke, established personal records.
Boys Basketball
Mars edged New Castle, 64-63, in the Ron Galbraith Classic hosted by Westminster College on Saturday. Tasso Sfanos led the Planets with 28 points. Ryan Ceh added 16 points and Remi Black 12.
Union 63, Coudersport 39 — Payton Johnston scored 30 points for the Golden Knights while Skyler Roxbury added 19. Union had a 16-point lead by halftime. Reilly Streich led Coudersport with 14 points.
Moniteau 67, Forest 17 — Thirteen different players scored for the Warriors, who led 39-6 by halftime. Chason Delarosa-Rugg, Connor Ealy, David Martino, Aidan Jackson and David Dessicino all scored eight points in the win.
Girls Basketball
Cheyenne Dowling scored 13 points for Union in a 53-13 victory over Rocky Grove. Ava Strauser and Hailey Theuret netted 10 points each.
