The Grove City Highfootball team was on track — until it nearly was derailed.

After taking a quick 14-0 lead, the Eagles had to hang on to beat Erie Central Tech 21-12 in the season opener atForker Field Friday night.

On Grove City's first offensive play of the game, Dwayne Martin caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Mike Burk.

Burk later scored on a quarterback sneak before leaving the game with a shoulder injury.

The Eagles didn't score again until Joe Kochemba rumbled 57 yards for a score in the final two minutes of the game.

Clinging to a 14-12 lead with four minutes to go, Marty Phipps intercepted a Central pass in the end zone on a first-and-goal from the 3 to end the threat.
