SLIPPERY ROCK Slippery Rock University receivers coach and former Knoch High football coach Paul Giesey died at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh Monday after an extended illness.
Giesey, 58, who spent the past five seasons as the receivers coach at SRU, coached at Knoch from 1989-97 and eight seasons (1979-86) as head coach at Montana Technical University.
His 1983 MTU team was ranked seventh in the NAIA national poll. He earned NAIA District 12 Coach of the year honors in 1983 and was the Frontier Conference Coach of the Year in 1982 and 1983.
Giesey also served as offensive coordinator at Frostburg State College in Maryland and Valparaiso (Indiana) University, as well as one season as graduate assistant at Illinois State University. He also served three seasons as a high school head coach in Nebraska.
Giesey was a middle school physical education teacher in the South Butler School District before his retirement in 2007.
As an athlete, Giesey earned all-conference honors at quarterback at Dakota (S.D.) Wesleyan College, where he earned his bachelor's degree as a double major in biology and physical education. Giesey received a master's degree in physical education from Illinois State.
ELLWOOD CITY Butler Country Club's Rob McClellan and Paul Hollstein led a team that included amateurs Erik Lenyk and Geoff Patterson to first place at Monday's pro-am event at Olde Stonewall Golf Club.The group shot a 131 in a best ball of professional-best ball of amateur format.John Aubrey Sr. of Aubrey's Dubbs Dred, Adam Corson of Dick's Sporting Goods, along with amateurs Jon Pratkanis and John Aubrey Jr. finished third with a score of 137.In the pro-pro better ball event, McClellan and Hollstein finished first with a 66, while John Aubrey Sr. and Corson were second with a 67.
