Bad Bunny has addressed a viral video that shows him throwing a fan's phone after the person tries to take a selfie with him on the street.
In a Monday tweet, the reggaeton sensation explained that he tossed the fan's phone due to "a lack of respect" and offered examples of what he would consider respectful fan interactions.
"The person who comes up to me to greet me, tell me something or just meet me will always receive my attention and respect," the chart-topping "Un Verano Sin Ti" artist tweeted in Spanish. "Those who come to put a damn phone in my face, I will consider it for what it is, a lack of respect and treat it as such."
The controversial clip, seen here in a tweet from @donfelixSPM, depicts a crowd of people following the musician across a bridge. When one woman walks up next to Bad Bunny and holds her phone out in an apparent attempt to take a selfie, he briefly smiles for the camera before throwing the fan's phone toward the body of water below.
The fan watches the flying phone in shock, while another person remarks in Spanish, "Wow, seriously?" The video has amassed millions of views and sparked a debate as to whether Bad Bunny's actions were justified.
Some have criticized Bad Bunny's behavior, while others have taken the vocalist's side, contending that the fan invaded his personal space.
Fellow musician Lido Pimienta replied to Bad Bunny's tweet, saying she saw nothing wrong with how he handled the situation. Pimiento added that, if anything, the fan behaved badly by disturbing him while he was walking calmly down the street.
In October, singer Steve Lacy ignited a similar discussion when he was filmed smashing a fan's disposable camera onstage after a concertgoer threw an object that struck him in the leg. Lacy later admitted that he "maybe ... couldve reacted better" in the moment but didn't believe he owed "anyone an apology."
"I don't blame him," @SequanHaynes tweeted in response to the Bad Bunny video. "Honestly I would've done the same."
"The bad bunny fandom is so weird," tweeted @adrianaserret. "What he did was rude af and if it would've been done to anyone defending him now their narrative would be different. Stop putting celebrities on pedestals!"

LAS VEGAS — UFC President Dana White was seen on video released by TMZ slapping his wife, Anne, while the two were on vacation in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, last month.
White told TMZ in an interview Tuesday he was “embarrassed” and concerned for how his three children were affected.
“You’ve heard me say for years, ‘There’s never ever an excuse for a guy to put his hands on a woman,’ and now here I am on TMZ talking about it,” White told the website.
UFC spokesman Chris Costello said neither the organization nor White would issue a statement to the Associated Press. Costello referred to White’s comments to TMZ.
The video shows the couple arguing before Anne White slaps her husband, who slaps back before others intervene.
“Dana and I have been married for almost 30 years," Anne White said in a statement to TMZ. "To say this is out of character for him is an understatement -- nothing like this has ever happened before. Unfortunately, we were both drinking too much on New Year’s Eve and things got out of control on both sides. We’ve talked this through as a family and apologized to each other. I just hope people will respect our privacy for the sake of our kids.”

Al Roker will return to NBC's "Today" show this week after a monthslong medical hiatus.
The morning news program announced Tuesday that Roker, 68, will be back in the studio at Rockefeller Plaza on Friday. The veteran weatherman has been in and out of the hospital since mid-November while receiving treatment for blood clots.
Roker — who has long been open about his health struggles — appeared virtually on “Today“ last month to update viewers on his condition, calling his recent time in the hospital ”a tough slog.”
"I'm not gonna deny this. This has been the hardest [hospitalization] yet and you know I've had my share of surgeries," the newscaster said via video. "But it gives you a profound sense of gratitude for this outpouring of prayers and thanks. I'm a very fortunate person."
In November, Roker was admitted to the hospital for blood clots in his leg and lungs. He briefly returned home around Thanksgiving before landing in the hospital again "due to some complications."
Roker confirmed Dec. 8 via social media that he had been released from the hospital and has since been busy celebrating the holidays with his family, according to his Instagram feed.
“I've missed you all so, so very much, all these faces,“ Roker said last month on the ”Today“ show. "It just means the world to me and to our family and my [wife], Deborah, who's just been my rock. I thank you so much. I really appreciated it."
His history of operations includes two knee replacements, gastric bypass, hip replacement, surgeries for carpal tunnel and back issues, plus a prostate cancer-related procedure in November 2020.
