Zelie plans talk
ZELIENOPLE — Borough officials have set a meeting for July 2 to talk with business owners on Main Street about the water line replacement project that will cut through the heart of the borough.
That meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the borough council chambers. Borough engineer Tom Thompson and representatives of Terra Works of Clarion, the project contractor, will explain the project and answer questions.
Borough councilman Drew Mathew said at Monday’s council meeting that he will hand deliver notices of the meeting this week to each of the business owners.
Borough manager Don Pepe said the waterline replacement project is expected to begin in mid-July.
Borough council last month awarded a $2.5 million contract to Terra Works for the project, which Pepe described as “extensive,” to replace a main water distribution line that is more than 100 years old.
The borough also will install new storm water sewers along sections of Main Street to improve storm water control.
The new lines will be on the east side of Main Street from the Route 19 bridge, south to the cemetery property area off Route 19 that connects to the borough’s new water storage tanks.
The lines will be under the parking lane when on Main Street.
The majority of the work on the new facilities will be done between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. because of restrictions from the state Department of Transportation, which borough officials said will make the project less disruptive for property owners.
Major construction this year will continue to October and then start up again in spring 2013. This break in the work is due to PennDOT restrictions that road paving is restricted during the cold months.
However, winter construction will be done in those areas not directly related to Main Street.
The project is expected to be done in August 2013.
Borough officials pointed out the contractor is aware of the festivals and events that occur in the summer and fall and will be careful to make sure these events will not be interrupted.
