Saxonburg to hold memorial service for slain police officer
SAXONBURG — The borough will hold a memorial service Dec. 4 in honor of the 35th anniversary of the shooting death of Police Chief Greg Adams.
On that day in 1980, Adams allegedly was shot by Donald Eugene Webb of Fall River, Mass. He was shot in the chest and under one arm during a traffic stop on Butler Street.
Mortally wounded, Adams reported Webb’s license plate number. Webb, who was 50 at the time, was never caught.
The service will take place at 1:30 p.m. at a memorial plaque outside the municipal building, 420 W. Main St.
Adams’ family has been invited to the service, and his widow and one of his sons have said they will attend.
The short service will include a color guard, a gun salute and the playing of taps. Former Chief Gordon Mainhart and current Chief Joe Beachem will speak, and Mayor Pam Bauman will declare the day in honor of Adams.
Current and former FBI agents who investigated the crime, as well as first responders who were at the scene will attend. Other borough, police, county and political officials have been invited to attend.
