Grove City's Jaskowak runs to 2nd straight District 10 title

GROVE CITY — Individual and team success don't always go hand in hand, especially in a sport like cross-country.

But for Grove City senior Dan Jaskowak, he's realized the best of both worlds.

At the District 10 Class AA boys championship Saturday at Sharon's Buhl Park, Jaskowak bested the field with a time of 16 minutes and 23 seconds. General McLane's Lukas Hallett was a distant second at 17:30.

It's the second straight district title for Jaskowak — he won the Class AAA crown in 2011 — and his latest effort helped the Eagles capture their third straight district team championship.

Grove City dominated the race, placing four in the top six and five in the top 10.

“I've been blessed to have a great group of guys to train with,” said Jaskowak, who experienced a setback over the summer when a right foot injury in early July hampered his training.

“I came back from a run one day and my foot just started to swell up,” he said. “I'm still not sure exactly what it was.”

Jaskowak missed three weeks of training and entered the high school season at less than 100 percent, but soon put the injury behind him.

“Once he got into midseason form, he took it upon himself to be one of the best runners in the state,” said Grove City coach Mike Sample. “I placed him in some tough races and if he didn't win them, he placed pretty high.”

As a junior, Jaskowak proved he belongs on the short list of truly elite runners in Pennsylvania, placing second at the state meet.

He will be making his fourth and final trip to the PIAA event, to be held Saturday in Hershey.

“When I missed all that training in the summer, I was concerned with how it could affect me at states,” he said. “I'm going to run my best. I really want to win and I think I have a good shot at doing that.”

Joining Jaskowak in the team competition will be teammates (Aaron Benka, fourth in District 10, 17:39), Ryan Budnik (fifth, 17:47), Ian Brown (sixth, 17:53), Ryan Whiteman (10th, 18:06), John Scott Somora (12th, 18:14) and Brandon Wise (16th, 18:24).

“The guys put in the time during the summer and they showed the dedication you must have,” said Sample. “We had a pretty good idea that we were going to win (District 10), it was just a question of by how wide a margin. We've built a pretty good program here.”
