Martinez loses no-hitter, game against Dodgers
Pedro Martinez will have to keep waiting for a no-hitter. So will the New York Mets.
Martinez didn't allow a hit Sunday until Antonio Perez tripled with one out in the eighth inning. Jayson Werth followed with a two-run homer, and the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled out a 2-1 victory over Martinez and the Mets.
The 33-year-old Martinez also took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning on June 7 against Houston. But three one-hitters are the closest he's been able to come.
"If a no-hitter comes, I'll take it," Martinez said. "I don't go out there expecting no-hitters, but I was lucky enough to be flirting with a no-hitter today. I'm just proud I was able to come here and show the fans what I didn't have enough time to show them before."
Martinez (12-5) began his major league career with the Dodgers in 1992. The Mets have been waiting 30 years longer to celebrate a no-hitter.
The Mets have had 23 complete-game one-hitters since joining the majors in 1962. Hall of Famers Nolan Ryan and Tom Seaver are among the pitchers who began their careers with the Mets and went on to throw no-hitters with other teams.
The Dodgers traded Martinez to Montreal in 1993, and nearly had to watch his first no-hitter come at their expense.
"I didn't want him to pitch a no-hitter and I didn't want him to beat us," former Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda said. "And I said, `This is the inning.' Not only was the no-hitter broken, but the shutout was gone and it was a tremendous win."
Perez hit Martinez's 86th pitch off the wall in left-center field. Three pitches later, Werth sent a drive into the pavilion seats in left-center.
"He had some good stuff going, obviously, to take a no-hitter that deep into the game," Werth said. "And with us getting to him that late in the game, it's one of the better wins I've been a part of."
Brad Penny (6-7) scattered 10 hits in his first complete game with the Dodgers.
Martinez nearly threw a no-hitter for the Expos on June 3, 1995, when he pitched nine perfect innings at San Diego before giving up a hit in the 10th. But Montreal won that game, which may have made Sunday's close call tougher to take.
"It's always hard. I felt like I was in command of the game - and all of a sudden, in two pitches, I lost it," Martinez said. "It was a little bit frustrating. I did whatever possible to give my team an opportunity to win, and I blew it at the end. No excuses. They battled and never gave up."
At Miami, A.J. Burnett (11-6) won his sixth consecutive start, and Juan Pierre had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run for Florida.Todd Jones pitched the ninth for his 25th save, helped by Pierre's diving catch of pinch-hitter Randy Winn's short fly ball to center with two men on to end the game.Brad Hennessey (4-5) allowed four runs and six hits in 4 2-3 innings.
At Atlanta, Jeff Francoeur hit a three-run homer and threw out two runners at the plate, and the Braves scored seven runs in the third inning.Chipper Jones also had four RBIs with a homer and two doubles. Mike Hampton (5-2) won in his return from the disabled list.Troy Glaus, Kelly Stinnett and Chris Snyder homered for Arizona, but Javier Vazquez (9-12) allowed a career-high nine runs.
At San Diego, rookie Robinson Tejeda (3-2) pitched seven strong innings, and Chase Utley and Pat Burrell had two-run singles in a seven-run fifth inning. The Phillies moved within a half-game of Houston in the NL wild-card race with their first road sweep of a three-game series this season. The Padres (58-59) became the first team to lead a division with a losing record this late in the season. The previous mark was held by the Texas Rangers, who topped the AL West at 52-62 on Aug. 11, 1994.Chan Ho Park (1-1) allowed six runs and five hits in four-plus innings for San Diego, which lost shortstop Khalil Greene to a broken left big toe.
At Chicago, Mark Prior (8-4) won for the first time in almost a month, getting help from Kerry Wood out of the bullpen.Pinch-hitter Jose Macias hit a tiebreaking, two-run single in the sixth inning off Matt Morris (12-5), shortly after Morris had been hit by a line drive.
At Denver, John Patterson (7-3) won his third straight start with eight innings of one-run ball and Washington completed its seventh series sweep of the season.Jose Acevedo (2-3) took the loss as the Rockies dropped their fourth straight.
Rookie Corey Hart hit his first career homer, a three-run shot that capped a five-run eighth inning, and Milwaukee snapped Cincinnati's 10-game road winning streak.Reliever Kane Davis (1-0) got the final out in the eighth for his first win since April 28, 2002, for the New York Mets.
Rafael Palmeiro went 0-for-4 in his first game since returning from a 10-day suspension for using steroids, making the final out with two runners on in the Orioles' 7-6 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.Baltimore supporters welcomed back Palmeiro with a mixed response, but many of those remaining in the crowd of 30,954 began chanting "Raffy! Raffy!" as he stepped to the plate in the ninth inning and dug in against closer Miguel Batista.Alas, Palmeiro sent a routine fly to right field, the only time all afternoon he hit the ball out of the infield.
In Kansas City, Mike Maroth (10-11) came within one out of a shutout in the nightcap, giving up five hits and allowing only one runner to reach second base. He was backed by a Detroit defense that turned four double plays in a game that took 1 hour, 58 minutes.Hard-luck loser Jose Lima (4-11) yielded five hits in his first complete game since Aug. 11, 2001, with the Tigers. But Kansas City dropped its 15th game in a row."It's not three losses in a row," Lima said. "It's 15 in a row. It is painful. It is ugly. It hurts. It is tough on everybody."Seldom-used Vance Wilson went 3-for-4 with a homer and scored three times to help the Tigers win the opener after losing left fielder Rondell White to a dislocated shoulder. Wilson scored the go-ahead run with two outs in the ninth on pinch-hitter Omar Infante's double off Ambiorix Burgos (1-5).
At New York, Hideki Matsui hit a three-run homer, Alex Rodriguez added his fifth home run in eight days and the Yankees completed a four-game sweep in a game delayed twice by rain. The Rangers have lost seven straight.Shawn Chacon (1-1) earned the win, allowing three runs in five innings. It was his fourth start as a Yankee and it ended a personal eight-game losing streak that began when he was with Colorado. He had not won in 12 starts dating to April 23 when he beat the Dodgers for the Rockies.
At Oakland, Calif., Joe Mauer doubled and scored on Matthew LeCroy's single in the ninth for Minnesota.Rich Harden struck out nine while allowing one hit in eight innings, but left without a decision because the A's managed only one run against Carlos Silva. Minnesota's only hit off Harden was Michael Ryan's long homer in the third.Juan Rincon (5-4) earned the win for the Twins, who took two of three in Oakland after losing 10 of their previous 13 games. Joe Nathan got his 29th save.
At Cleveland, pinch-hitter Travis Lee homered off Bob Wickman (0-4) in the ninth, sending Tampa Bay to its first series sweep in Cleveland and hurting the Indians' wild-card chances. Cleveland is 11 games over .500 on the road but 27-30 at Jacobs Field.
At Seattle, Darin Erstad drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning single, and Los Angeles completed a three-game sweep to move back into sole possession of first place in the AL West.Vladimir Guerrero added a three-run homer, and Casey Kotchman also connected. Brendan Donnelly (8-3) won and Francisco Rodriguez earned his 27th save.
