Benjamin T. “Gentle Ben” Carroll, 87, of Cabot, formerly of Worthington, died Tuesday at the Good Samaritan Hospice at Concordia.

He was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Brookville to James B. Carroll and Helen Wilson Carroll.

He lived in Armstrong County for 65 years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific. He served as an electrician's mate on the submarine the USS Barbarro.

He was a conductor on the Pittsburgh and Shawmut Railroad.

He was a member of the Worthington Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder. He also was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Submarine Vets of World War II.

He loved auto auctions and annual trips to Palm Harbor, Fla., during winter. He also enjoyed traveling and playing cards.He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Allshouse Carroll, who he married Feb. 8, 1947, of Cabot; one daughter, Cynthia Houpt and her husband, Alan, of Oak Hill, Va.; one son, James Carroll and his wife, Peggy, of Harve de Grace, Md.; two granddaughters, Stephanie Hinegardner and her husband, Sean, of Aberdeen, Md., and Loren Dixon and her husband, Dan, of Port Deposit, Md.; four great grandchildren, Savannah Cash of Aberdeen, Md., Cole, Caleb and Sway Dixon of Port Deposit, Md.; several nieces and nephews; several great nieces and nephews; and many friends.He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, William Carroll; and his sister, Betty Carroll Shiling.

<B>CARROLL</B> — Friends of Benjamin T. “Gentle Ben” Carroll, who died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the <B>F. Duane Snyder Funeral Home</B> in Worthington, with additional visitation Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service, which will be at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
