Bertram Szakelyhidi
Bertram Szakelyhidi, 89, of Ellwood City died Thursday evening at Friendship Village of Dublin, Ohio.
He was the oldest child of William and Suzan Bihary Szakelyhidi, who emigrated from Hungary.
He chose to learn welding and blueprinting and went to Cleveland and to Bridgeport, Conn.
At the start of World War II, he came home to Zelienople and was a welder in the shipyard for Dravo Corp. on Neville Island. Later he was a welder from Blaw-Knox Co. in Ellwood City, where he retired.
Since July 2006, he had lived in Columbus, Ohio, with his son, Kenneth B. (Karen) Szakelyhidi.
He enjoyed his family, Hungarian music and food, and Ohio State football.
Surviving are two brothers, Frank (Maryjean) Szakelyhidi of Zelienople, and Andrew (Stella) Szakelyhidi of Harmony; and two sisters, Rose Braham of St. Paul Homes,Greenville, Pa., and Elizabeth (Bill) Kennedy of Zelienople.
In addition to his son Kenneth, he is survived by grandchildren Lynn (Thomas) Harris of Renfrew, Kenneth Szakelyhidi of Portersville, and Shawn (Tonya) Szakelyhidi of Fredericksburg, Va.; great-grandchildren Andy, Michael, and Matthew Hack, and Hailey and Christian Szakelyhidi; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Doka Szakelyhidi, who died in September of 1998; and two brothers, William Szakelyhidi Jr. of Koppel, Pa., and Joseph A. Szakelyhidi of Cranberry Township.
