Richard L. “Dick” West, 82, of Pine Township, Mercer County, formerly of Slippery Rock, passed away at 12:33 p.m. Thursday at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Slippery Rock on Feb. 2, 1929, to Burnett Lynn West and Helene Harps West. He married Joan E. Smith on Dec. 12, 1951.

Dick was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator. He retired from the Adobe Mining Corp. Previously he worked at the Coal Cleaning Plant in McCoy Town, Pine Township; Montgomery Block Works in Harrisville, and the former Tajon Trucking Co. He began his career at the former Chutz Brothers Coal Co.

He was a member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock. He was a graduate of Slippery Rock High School, Class of 1947. Dick, along with his family, enjoyed boating and camping along the Allegheny River in Moss Grove, Pa. Dick and his wife spent 17 years in Eustis, Fla., during the winter months.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, at home; two daughters, Ann Lind and her husband, Ed, of Poland, Ohio, and Sue West of Portersville; two grandchildren, Megan Zimmers and her husband, Eric, of Poland, Ohio, and David Lind and his wife, Mary, of Struthers, Ohio; three great-grandchildren, David Lind Jr., and Aubrey and Elliot Zimmers; two sisters, Elaine Eller and her husband, David, of Fairfield, Calif., and Hazel Allen of Slippery Rock.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Leland, William “Bill,” and Dale West.

<B>WEST</B> — The family of Richard L. “Dick” West, who died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2011, will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the <B>Cunningham Funeral Home</B>, 306 Bessemer Ave., Grove City. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. Sunday with Dennis Barger, lay minister, officiating.In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be made to the VNA Hospice, 154 Hindman Road, Butler, PA 16001.
