Richard P. Lewis, 83, of Butler passed away Tuesday at Butler Memorial Hospital.

He was born Dec. 27, 1925, in Butler County and was raised by Agnes Lewis.

Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II.

He was a member of the St. Paul Catholic Church and the VFW Post 249, and he was a life member of the Oneida Valley Volunteer Fire Department.

He retired from Castle Rubber after 35 years in February 1989. He also had worked in the coal mines.

In earlier years, he had played baseball for various teams in Butler County.

Surviving are his wife, Irene (Vargo) Lewis, who he married Nov. 25, 1947; three daughters, Shirley Lewis of Butler, Patricia and Gary Lumley of East Butler, and Jane Lewis of East Butler; a son, Daniel J. and Karen Lewis of Butler; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; and a daughter-in-law, Linda Lewis of Butler.

He was preceded in death by a son, Richard A. Lewis, who died July 22, 1987; and a granddaughter, Michelle Dawn Lumley.

<B>LEWIS</B> — Friends of Richard P. Lewis, who died Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2009, will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the <B>Young Funeral Home</B>, 127 W. Jefferson St. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the St. Paul Catholic Church, 127 N.
