Route 8 south lanes blocked Friday morning

MIDDLESEX TWP — A modular trailer typically used as a construction office overturned Friday morning and blocked the southbound lanes of Route 8.

Middlesex officer Conrad Pfeifer said the trailer was not on the bed of a semi, but had its own axle and was being pulled by a truck tractor.

Pfeifer said the rig’s driver was making the left turn from Route 228 East to head south on Route 8 when the modular trailer overturned.

The driver, along with police, discovered the modular was missing a rear wheel.

Pfeifer said the emergency brakes that allow the modular to break away from the truck in such a situation were not functioning, and the driver was making the turn too fast.

Pfeifer said the driver, who was not hurt, is employed by Ott Towing of Perryopolis, Fayette County. He was hauling the modular to Oakdale, Allegheny County, when the accident happened.

Pfeifer called a tow service, and a heavy wrecker was able to upright the modular. He said once the brakes are repaired and the missing rear wheel is replaced, the damaged modular should be able to be towed.

Until then, the modular will sit in the Paracca parking lot near the intersection.

The driver will be cited under a state vehicle code regarding overturned commercial vehicles, Pfeifer said.

He said emergency services were on the scene from 8:17 to 10:43 a.m.
