Max Marcotte broke a scoreless tie with 30 minutes, 49 seconds remaining and the Seneca Valley boys soccer team went on to a 2-0 victory over Conestoga in its PIAA Class 4A semifinal Wednesday night in Chambersburg.

Marcotte scored his 12th goal of the season off a feed from Beaux Lizewski, who registered his team-leading 17th assist. Gavin Loya netted his 19th goal of the campaign off an assist from Cole Kamarec with 7:37 left in the game.

Ryan Krumenacher got the shutout in goal, registering nine saves.

Seneca Valley (21-1-1) avenged a loss to Conestoga in the state championship game last season. The Raiders’ lone loss this season is a 1-0 setback to Pine-Richland in the WPIAL title game.

“This was a young (Conestoga) team we beat tonight, but a very good team,” SV coach George Williams said. “They had four or five starters back from last year’s team.”

The Raiders advanced to the state championship game for the third successive season. They will play Lower Merion — a 1-0 winner over Parkland — at 7 p.m. Saturday at Eagle View Middle School in Mechanicsburg.

“Lower Merion is the No. 1 team out of District 1,” Williams said. “They played Conestoga twice during the season and split those games, but Lower Merion is considered the stronger team.

“It’s the state finals. It should be two really good teams playing each other.”

Williams doesn’t take the feat of reaching three consecutive state finals lightly.

“It’s just amazing,” he said. “We’ve been blessed by having tremendous talent come through here over the past few years. It’s a privilege to work with these guys.”

Conestoga ended its season at 19-5.

Volleyball

Freeport advanced to the PIAA 2A championship game with a 3-2 victory over Philipsburg Osceola Wednesday night in Punxsutawney.

After dropping the first set 12-25, Freeport took a 2-1 lead by winning sets by 25-20 and 25-18 counts. Philipsburg Osceola (19-2) pulled even with a 25-15 win in the fourth set before the Yellowjackets put together a 15-8 win in the fifth set to take the match.

The Yellowjackets (22-2) will face York Catholic (23-1) — a 3-1 winner over Notre Dame CP — for the state title at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cumberland High School in Mechanicsburg.
