Scoop seeking 90 wins

I continued to pick winners at an 80 percent clip last week, going 4-1 in the first week of the playoffs. It's hard to believe, but we are down to just two teams, Freeport and Slippery Rock, a pair of Class 3A squads that will be playing Friday in a WPIAL quarterfinal and District 10 semifinal, respectively.

The Yellowjackets' route to this point has been a straight line, going undefeated against Class 3A competition this year. Slippery Rock, on the other hand, has had some bumps in the road. But the Rockets are still playing and that, my friends, is all that matters.

Let's break both of these games down.

West Mifflin at Freeport — The Titans put up 54 points in a first-round win over Southmoreland last week, but are now preparing to face a Freeport team that has surrendered less than 14 points in seven of 10 games this season.

West Mifflin has speed and that is certainly something Freeport will have to contend with.

The Yellowjackets earned a first-round bye by winning the Allegheny Six Conference title outright. Any time a team has not played in two weeks, the question of rest vs. rust arises.

But playing at home with a spot in the district semifinals on the line, I like the 'Jackets' chances.

Score: Freeport 25-16

Slippery Rock vs. Hickory — These same teams met last year for the right to play in the District 10 championship game, with the Rockets prevailing 23-17. Slippery Rock also topped Hickory 23-20 earlier this season. It's been a role reversal in this matchup because the Hornets previously had the Rockets' number.

I picked against Slippery Rock last week. I was swayed by the eye-popping numbers Oil City running back Ethen Knox had put up this season and while he had a great game, the Oilers' defense completely missed the mark against the Rockets' attack.

I believe Hickory will prove to be a more formidable opponent, but the Rockets' season continues with a victory in New Wilmington.

Score: Slippery Rock 28-24

Scoop is 88-22 on the season
