Pennwest workers strike Union members picket

Workers at Pennwest Homes picket on Route 38 near the company's facility in Allegheny Township. The union went on strike Monday after voting to reject an offer from the company.

ALLEGHENY TWP — More than 100 workers at Pennwest Homes have been on strike since Monday.

Members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 2439 declared a work stoppage. The union voted Feb. 28 to reject the latest offer by the company.

“This is about these workers making a wage they can support their family on. The workers want a pension they can retire on. These workers built this company and want to share in the growth of the company,” said union business representative Robert Miller in a statement.

According to the statement, workers are seeking better wages, a “reasonable” pension package and the ability to share in the company’s growth.

Strikers were out on Route 38 near the entrance to the company on Friday afternoon. Some drivers honked their vehicles’ horns in support of union members.

Negotiations between the union and the company are ongoing. The union said picketing will take place seven days a week until negotiations are resolved and an agreement is made.

Strikers on Friday afternoon declined to comment, and referred all comment to Miller, who did not return a call for further comment.

General Manager Wes Minster did not return a call for comment.

The company, founded in 2005, builds modular homes. It is owned by the Commodore Corporation of Indiana.
