Campsite reservations modernized
Reserving a campsite in a state forest in Pennsylvania just got easier.
Currently, reservations for sites in state forests are made by visiting a state forest district office and requesting a permit.
Because requests for state forest campsite reservations have doubled in the past five years, an electronic reservation format has been introduced so campsites can be managed effectively, maintenance is sufficient and site-specific conditions that arise can be posted.
All designated roadside campsites, camping areas and equestrian camping areas will be available through the reservation system.
Nondesignated motorized camping no longer will be permitted, according to a news release from the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
People looking to make a reservation can view campsite information, location and photos online and reserve a campsite up to 11 months in advance by visiting pennsylvaniastateparks.reserveamerica.com/welcome.do. Information is also available on the ReserveAmerica camping app, by calling 888-727-2757 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, or visiting the district office where campers wish to stay.
A $10 per-night fee for state residents and $15 per-night fee for out-of-state visitors, plus a $6.50 transaction fee will help pay for the new system, the release said.
Credit cards will be accepted online for other permits, such as for firewood and ATVs.
No fees will be collected for trail-side, backpack and water-trail camping.
