Police: Butler County man pointed shotgun at woman, himself

A Butler County man is accused of pointing a shotgun at a woman then attempting to shoot himself, but according to state police, the gun was unloaded.

Michael Tyler Harris, 40, was charged Thursday, July 9, by state police with felony child endangerment and one misdemeanor count each of terroristic threats and simple assault following an incident Wednesday in Clearfield Township.

Police said they were dispatched to Three Quarter Lane for a man who threatened a woman with a weapon.

Police said while Harris and a woman were in an upstairs bedroom, Harris retrieved a Mossberg 12-gauge shotgun, pointed it at the woman and threatened to kill her.

Police said Harris then pointed the gun at himself and attempted to shoot, but there was no ammunition in the gun.

According to court documents, the woman then ran out of the house and yelled for her juvenile daughter inside the home to run to the neighbor’s house. Harris also left the residence but returned shortly after and began striking the front door to gain entry, police said.

Before the incident, Harris was getting ready to leave the residence to seek treatment for substance use issues, police said.

Harris is being held in Butler County Prison on $125,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. July 21 before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
