Conflicting styles clash in Moniteau, Keystone
Moniteau likes to run. Keystone likes to throw. Both would like to win Friday night.
Badly.
The Warriors (2-2, 2-1) send their ground attack to Knox for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday against the pass-happy Panthers (1-3).
"We'll find out where we're at this week," Moniteau coach Steve Wilson said. "They're all pretty much must-wins now and we're getting back to the quality of football we feel we should be at."
That's power football, featuring running back Matt Schandelmeier.
Schandelmeier has 64 carries for 603 yards and 10 touchdowns so far this season, including 300 yards and seven scores over the past two games.
"They've got the power runner in Schandelmeier and the scat back in (Adam) Cousins," Keystone coach Jason Nellis said. "And they're always physical up front."
Cousins has 34 carries for 210 yards and three TDs this year.
Keystone is coming off a 14-13 loss at Karns City, denied a shot at its second consecutive win when Scott Lutz missed a PAT in the waning seconds.
The Panthers have also been defeated by Redbank Valley (26-8) and Clarion (20-7) before beating Union (40-6).
"That loss stung a lot Friday night, but we're over it now," Nellis said. "We were six of eight on PATs this year before that kick.
"The snap wasn't perfect and Scott's timing was off … It was just a bad time to miss one."
Keystone likes to throw the football, only Nellis isn't exactly sure who's going to be throwing to whom.
Mike Switzer has completed 24 of 53 passes for 351 yards, three touchdowns and four interceptions on the year. Justin Bifano, the team's starting quarterback as a sophomore, missed all of last year with injury.
Bifano replaced Switzer behind center during the Karns City game and completed five of six passes for 78 yards - including three to Switzer.
"We just decided to change things up, give them a different look and try to get something going," Nellis said. "Both of those guys can play the position.
"We'll make a decision Friday as to who's going to play where."
Wilson isn't bothered by Keystone's quarterback situation.
"They're going to run the same package no matter what," he said. "They have their quarterback in the shotgun all the time and they spread you out with four receivers."
Kyle McMunn has 15 catches for 184 yards while Alex Rowan has five for 107 and Corey Lee four for 113.
"All of those guys are good," Wilson said. "They know how to go get the football. Our secondary will be tested because they (Keystone) thrive on big plays from their passing game."
The Warrior secondary features David Rumbaugh and Cousins at safety, Travis Shaffer and Kyle Mauthe at cornerback.
Ryan Protzman returned an interception for a touchdown against Union last week.
"Ryan led us with nine tackles in that game," Wilson said. "He did a great job at linebacker along the line of scrimmage."
Derek Swartzfager has emerged as a solid running back for the Panthers. He has rushed for 234 yards on the year and is coming off consecutive 100-yard rushing efforts.
"We just couldn't run against Redbank and Clarion," Nellis said. "They have outstanding defenses."
Keystone's defense has forced 11 turnovers in its last three games. Bifano, Cody Col
well and Ross Neely anchor that unit at linebacker.
