Schandelmeier earns MVP
Moniteau senior Matt Schandelmeier grabbed field MVP honors after taking first place in all three field events Saturday at the Union (New Castle) Track and Field Invitational.
Schandelmeier's effort in the shot put was 50 feet, three inches. He managed 143 feet in the discus and 176-5 in the javelin.
The performance helped Moniteau finish in second place with 100 points, 22 behind New Castle.
The Warriors other first-place finish went to Aaron Smith in the 800-meter run (two minutes, seven seconds).
Second-place efforts went to David Rumbaugh in the 400 run, Zack Thompson in the 300 hurdles and Ryan Protzman in both the shot put and discus.
The 1,600 relay team of Smith, Thompson, Chris Switzer and Andy Weichey also placed second.
Switzer placed third in the pole vault and, along with Smith, Ben Blank and Matt O'Malley, took third in the 3200 relay event.
The 400 relay event saw Schandelmeier, Thompson, Weichey and Tyler Grossman place fourth.
In other action:
n Casey McCaffrey placed first in the 400-meter run and manned a leg on the winning 1,600 relay team as the Slippery Rock girls track and field team competed at the Center Invitational on Saturday.
McCaffrey, a senior, took the 400 event with a time of one minute, 3.09 seconds.
The 1,600 relay team also included Janelle Hartzell, Abby Basta and Elissa McCune. They finished in 4:21.77.
Basta placed second in the 300-intermediate hurdles at 48.96.
Angela Shaffer was second in the high jump at 4 feet, 10 inches.
Dan Dillman led Slippery Rock's boys with a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 47-8.
• Moniteau senior Alyssa Deal finished first in the 1,600 and 800-meter runs and was a member of the winning 1,600 relay team as the Warrior girls placed third out of ten teams Friday at the Union (New Castle) Invitational.
Deal's finish in the 1,600 was five minutes, 28 seconds and she crossed the finish line in the 800 in 2:23.
Also running a leg on the winning relay quartet was Haley McFeaters, Amy Gladd and Amanda Gladd. The group finished in 4:20.
McFeaters was Moniteau's other individual winner, taking the 400 run in 1:00.10.
Kendra Hall placed second in both the shot put (34 feet, five inches) and the discus (98-0).
Kristi Costa's second place finish came in the high jump at 4-8.
Amy Gladd also had strong showings in the 800 run and triple jump, earning a second place (2:31) and third place (32-3 ), respectively.
Baseball
A-C Valley's Jesse Mangel struck out 18 batters in a complete game, 5-3 win over George Junior Republic in high school baseball play Saturday afternoon.
Mangel added a double and two runs scored for the Falcons (3-1).
Elsewhere:
• Brandon Ray struck out 12 batters while walking just two in a complete game performance as Slippery Rock held on for a 7-5 win over Titusville.
Bill Messer tripled and drove in two runs for Slippery Rock (4-1, 1-1).
• Jesse Alfreno's grand slam home run keyed a seven-run third inning for Grove City as the Eagles made easy work of Franklin, 15-5 in five innings.
