Butler Twisters stay atop Iron & Oil baseball by taking fall league crown

Make it 3-for-3.

The Butler Twisters continue to be batting 1.000 when it comes to Iron &Oil Baseball League championships.

The Twisters won their third league crown in two years recently, defeating previously unbeaten GAMA Sports, 3-1, in the title game of the fall league.

There were six teams in the Iron & Oil Fall League — a high school-age circuit — which took place for the first time.

“The league decided to organize a fall schedule because kids wanted to play more baseball,” Twisters coach Chris Singleton said. “Since no one could play in the spring, they weren't ready to be done.”

Only half of the Twisters' roster that won the league over the summer returned for the fall.

“Some of our players were involved in football or other fall sports and were unable to play,” Singleton said.

Still, the team finished 9-3 in the regular season, second to the 10-0 GAMA Sports. GAMA Sports shut out the Twisters twice, 7-0 and 3-0, during the regular season.

The Twisters' approach to the fall league was more about being relaxed and having fun than intense competition.

That all changed once the playoffs arrived.

“During the season, kids played different positions, guys pitched who don't normally pitch ... honestly, I didn't do much coaching,” Singleton said. “The boys just wanted to have a good time with it.

“Once they reached the playoffs, though, it was serious baseball. They wanted to win it.”

The Twisters defeated Brickles 7-3 in the semifinals. Brach Tarcha was the winning pitcher and Tyler Robinson hit a pair of doubles.

The championship game with GAMA Sports was even at 1 entering the final inning. Jonah Bartholic walked to begin the frame. An attempted sacrifice bunt was missed by the batter and Bartholic was caught in a rundown between first and second base.

Whiler trying to throw Bartholic out, the first baseman's throw hit the runner in the helmet. The ball took an awkward carom into short left-center, enabling Bartholic to score.

The Twisters wound up with a 3-1 victory.

“We did everything wrong on that play,” Singleton said. “We missed the bunt try, our runner wandered too far off the bag ... yet it all worked out.”

CJ Sjnglerton and Colin Patterson pitched three innings each against GAMA Sports, allowing one run on three huits. Bartholic had a double and scored two runs, Patterson tripled and Kyle Yost had two RBI.

“These kids definitely take pride in winning that league,” Singleton said. “We're the only community team in the league. All of the others are travel teams.

“Winning a league while representing the Butler community ... that means something to these guys.”
