Butler man sentenced in DUI crash

A Butler man was sentenced to serve 15 to 36 months in prison for a March 2021 crash in Oakland Township in which he struck a vehicle head-on while driving drunk and injuring the female driver.

Tyler Jack Barkman, 29, was sentenced Tuesday in Common Pleas Court after pleading no contest to a felony charge of aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence that state police filed following a March 23 collision on Oneida Valley Road.

Barkman was driving south in a 2008 Ford Explorer when he struck a 2010 Toyota Corolla driven by Stephanie V. Cooper, 32, of Parker, police said.

Barkman’s vehicle swerved into Cooper’s lane and struck her vehicle head-on, police said.

Cooper was taken by Butler Ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital for major injuries, but her passenger was unharmed in the crash, police said.

Barkman also was taken to the hospital for suspected minor injuries.

According to a Butler County 911 report, emergency crews were on scene for more than an hour, providing emergency medical care and clearing the scene. East Butler and Oneida Valley fire departments assisted at the scene. Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Barkman’s sentence includes 12 months of probation to be served after his release from prison, a $1,500 fine, 40 hours of community service and $40,193 in restitution.
