Versatile Snyder keys A-C Valley

FOXBURG — Meredith Snyder isn't your normal setter.

The senior on the A-C Valley volleyball team stands 5-foot-10 and towers over her contemporaries at the position.

Her blend of height, quick hands and leaping ability makes her a triple threat on the volleyball court for the Falcons.

“I think she is the best player in the (Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference),” said A-C Valley volleyball coach Doug Knox. “First of all, she's one of the best athletes in the school. It's a big advantage when you have a setter who is 5-10 and who can block and spike. She has great hands for a setter and a great ability to see the court.”

When asked if Snyder is better at one particular skill than another, Knox quickly answers.

“It's hard to pick just one,” he said. “She's good at everything.”

That can also be said for Snyder as a multi-sport athlete.

As well as dominating on the volleyball court, Snyder is a standout basketball player for the Falcons as well as a PIAA qualifier on the school's track and field team.

Snyder owns the school record in the high jump, a mark that was once held by her mother.

Volleyball, though, is No. 1 on Snyder's list.

“I like everything about it,” Snyder said. “I like the team aspect of it. It's a team game and not so much an individual sport. I just like being out there with the team.”

Snyder is averaging approximately seven kills, four blocks and 10 assists per match this season.

It's unusual for a setter to average that many kills and blocks.

“I'm most comfortable setting,” Snyder said. “But hitting can be fun, too.”

Snyder is also one of the best on the team in serving.

In a match against Cranberry last week, she served 17 straight points.

Against Venango Catholic on Thursday, she served 10 consecutive points for the Falcons in another 3-0 sweep.

“I think I've always been able to help the team out in different ways,” Snyder said.

She is hoping to help out a college volleyball team next season.

Snyder always has wanted to play the sport at the next level. She has already received interest from several different schools.

For now, Snyder is concentrating on her senior season at A-C Valley.

The Falcons have a big hurdle to overcome in fellow league member Clarion, the top-ranked Class A team in Pennsylvania.

Clarion handed the Falcons their only loss this season.

“It's always been a goal of ours to beat (Clarion),” Snyder said. “It would definitely be exciting for us if we could beat them.”
