Jacob Wolak made a run at it, but fell one stroke short.

The Slippery Rock senior — the only four-time PIAA qualifier in the program’s history — carded a 72-67-139 to place second at the PIAA 2A Boys Golf Championship Tuesday at Penn State University. He was 5-under-par for the tournament.

Rockets coach Merle Whitmer talked with an assistant coach on Monday night, wondering how Wolak would respond to a three-hole trip-up earlier in the day.

“He knew he was capable of winning,” Whitmer said. “He very well could have.”

Nick Ciocca of Devon Prep shot a 70-68-138 to beat him out. Ciocca had to sink a five-and-a-half-foot putt to avoid a playoff with Wolak. Slight mishaps — namely a missed two-foot putt on Hole No. 11 — ended up costing the latter.

Whitmer said the greens were slick and the wind chill was in the 30s.

“To play in that kind of weather ... it was something else, but it was a lot of fun,” Whitmer said.

Knoch’s Mitch Davies finished 45th with a 161 while Moniteau’s Jacob Felsing and Freeport’s Nate Covey tied for 49th with a 167. Moniteau’s Dawson Wallace was 71st with a 188.
