Tornado soccer 3-0

Butler's girls soccer team improved to 3-0 as Chloe Weiland scored three goals, Ella Rekich and Tori Stevenson two apiece in a 7-0 blanking of visiting Hempfield Monday night.

Delaney Yaracs played the first half in goal for Butler, which used three netminders on the night. Butler hosts Penn-Trafford at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Boys Soccer

Landon Mohney had two goals and an assist as Butler (3-0) stayed unbeaten with a 5-0 shutout of North Hills.

Evan Lubinsky, Cody Lubinsky and Jack Beneigh scored a goal each. Noah Wolford and Drew Knight split duties in goal for the Golden Tornado.

Slippery Rock 5, Mercer 1 — Logan Arblaster and Hunter Berry both scored two goals and Nick Kingerski added one for the Rockets (1-2).

Connor Wallace made three saves in the win.

Boys Golf

Tyler Figlioli, Hunter Swidzinski and Lucas Slear each carded a 39 to lead Butler to a 199-208 win over North Allegheny at North Park Golf Course.

The Golden Tornado improved to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in section matches.

Mars 202, Seneca Valley 209 — At Cranberry Highlands, the Planets featured three golfers who scored 38 or better while topping the Raiders.

Ryan Steigerwald led the way with a 1-over 36, Blake Bertolo had a 37 and Will Campbell a 38.

Nolan Nicklas carded a 37 for SV.

District 10 — Slippery Rock's 396 strokes placed the Rockets fifth out of seven teams in a Region 2 match at Grove City Country Club.

Slippery Rock was led by an 83 from Jacob Wolak.

Grove City won on its home course with a 335, paced by Toby Matson's 74.

Girls Golf

Autumn Stewart and Mariska Shunk both shot 56 as Moniteau won the second Mega Match of the season at Clarion Oaks.

The Warriors had a team score of 169, besting runner-up Cranberry by 11 strokes. Emma Covert carded a 57 for Moniteau.

Cross Country

Butler senior CJ Singleton won the annual Marty Uher Invitational Saturday at California (Pa.) University. He completed the course in 16 minutes, 13 seconds for his first victory of the season.

Girls Volleyball

Cassidy Dell had 12 points, 25 assists and eight kills as Freeport defeated Mars, 3-0, Tuesday night. Scores were 25-11, 25-15, 25-14.

Erica Lampus contributed 11 points and six kills for the Yellowjackets in their season opener. Sydney Selker had 14 points and five kills, Kayla Carnahan 24 digs, Josie Russo three kills and four blocks, Hadley Hellgrin four kills and four blocks, Ava Soilis 19 digs and seven assists, Grace Beach 16 points.

Freeport plays Thursday at Highlands.

Shaler 3, Knoch 0 — The Knights lost by scores of 25-8, 25-9, 25-10.

Spikefest Tournament — Butler won its season opening 8-team Spikefest Tournament at home over the weekend, defeating Shaler 1-0 in the semifinals and Grove City 2-0 in the finals.

Taylor Welter led the Golden Tornado with 35 kills, seven aces and 34 digs. Maisy Gibson and Ava Plunkard had 13 kills each, Brynn Morton 12 kills, Megan Penrod 11 aces and 48 digs.

Butler placed second in Pool A with a 4-2 record. Grove City won that pool with a 5-1 record. Serra Catholic was 2-4, Hopewell 1-5.

Shaler won Pool B at 6-0, followed by McDowell, Mars and Kiski Area with 2-4 records.
