The Pennsylvania Music Educators Association's District 5 Chorus, hosted by the Butler Intermediate High School Vocal Music Department, will culminate in a public concert at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 16 in the Intermediate High School auditorium.

Tickets will be available at the door. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students and senior citizens.

The District 5 Chorus will meet Jan. 14 to 16 at the intermediate school. Selected students from public high school choirs in Butler, Beaver, Lawrence and Mercer counties will comprise the 176 voice chorus for the three-day event.

BUTLER TWP — The annual January Ice Jam will be held Jan. 16 and 17, one week later than usual, at the Days Inn on Route 8.Admission is free, but donations are accepted. All of the proceeds go to charity.Bluegrass bands begin performing at 7 p.m. Jan. 16 and at 1 p.m. Jan. 17. Music can be heard until about midnight both nights.As many as 32 bands will appear on stage in Holiday Hall. Many musicians will jam in the halls and rooms of the hotel as well. PITTSBURGH — In celebration of Sidney the penguin's first birthday, the National Aviary will offer free admission and special penguin encounters and activities throughout the day on Jan. 19.Visitors will have the opportunity sign a birthday card for Sidney and learn about the aviary's new open-air African penguin exhibit, Penguin Point, under construction and expected to be finished by late spring. PITTSBURGH — Music in a Great Space, the concert series at Shadyside Presbyterian Church, presents organist J. Christopher Pardini performing selected works of Felix Mendelssohn at 4 p.m. Feb. 8 at the church, 5121 Westminster Place.This year marks the 200th anniversary of the 1809 birth of the Romantic period composer.The Feb. 8 concert will present Sonatas 1, 3, and 5, as well as the first two of his Preludes and Fugues.
