Jaded Exhibit
An exhibit of 21 jade pieces in "Jade: Stone of Heaven" will remain on display approximately through February at the Maridon Museum, 322 N. McKean St.
The pieces, which include animals, people and vases, among other shapes, will be displayed until the exhibit of Japanese dolls returns for Hina Matsuri, or Girl's Day Festival. That event was held March 1 last year.
A different children's program is scheduled for Jan. 10 at the museum.
Japanese New Year, or Oshoogatsu, will take place from 11 a.m. to noon Jan. 10 for children ages 4 to 10 accompanied by an adult. This program is free.
Guided by Dixie Lipnichan, a teacher from Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School, and her student, Mariah Collins, children will actively explore the Japanese New Year celebration. Children will learn to play Japanese games, such as fukuwarai (funny face game), koma (tops), hanetsuki (Japanese badminton) and hanafuda (flower cards).
Participants will also be making a New Year's resolution coloring craft, as well as learning Japanese phrases.
Participation is free but space is limited, so call 724-282-0123 for a reservation.
