New school possible
JACKSON TWP — The Seneca Valley School District could build a new school in Evans City as early as 2018, according to the district’s director of buildings, grounds and security.
Robert Cook briefed the school board Monday night and outlined a plan for renovations and upgrades to many of the district’s buildings and athletic fields.
Cook stressed that his plan is more of a long-range road map of projects that may or may not happen, but added that Superintendent Trace Vitale asked him to compile a long list of potential projects.
Perhaps the most ambitious would be building a school on the grounds of the Evans City Middle and Elementary School along Route 68.
Cook said the current school was built in 1939 and has undergone substantial renovation. The last major upgrades were done in 1989.
“It’s time we take a good hard look at that building and make sure we’re doing what’s best for the district and the community,” Cook said. “But we have many, many more meetings and research to do before even coming to that decision.”
He added that school officials have a “long road to haul before making any kind of decision” on that building, but added that preliminary costs put the new school at $43 million.
If the building does happen, the new school in Evans City would be about 180,000 square feet and would likely be constructed in the summer of 2018.
According to school officials, the current building can handle 1,325 students and is now at 1,013.
Other plans call for possibly installing artificial turf on athletic fields in the district and minor building maintenance projects.
