Local golfers reach PIAA tourney

Butler’s Hunter Swidzinski and Mars’ Blake Bertolo both qualified for the PIAA Class 3A Boys Golf individual championship tournament thanks to a strong second round at the WPIAL final Thursday at Allegheny Country Club.

Swidzinski carded a 75, which, added to his 74 from the first round last week, gave him a total of 149 and tied him for fifth place.

Bertolo finished in 10th place with a 155 (76-79).

Central Catholic’s Rocco Salvitti won the district championship with a 139.

The competition included 38 golfers, with the top 14 moving on to the state event, scheduled Oct. 17-18 at Penn State University.

Girls Tennis

Knoch’s doubles duo of Ally Bauer and Lindsey Greb won two matches to reach Friday’s WPIAL Class 2A championship where they will face Sewickley Academy’s Rayna Thakkar and Gwyn Belt.

The match will begin at 1 p.m. at Bethel Park High School.

Bauer and Greb, the district’s top-seeded tandem, received a bye into Thursday’s quarterfinals before defeating teams from South Park and Chartiers Valley.

Knoch’s other doubles team of Ava Santora and Jade Nether reached the semifinals before falling to Thakkar and Belt.

Santora and Nether will take on Chartiers Valley’s Kaitlyn Kuczinski and Delaney Fox in the consolation match, with the winners earning a spot in the upcoming state tournament.

Cross Country

Drew Griffith took first place overall for the Butler boys as the Golden Tornado ran against North Allegheny and Shaler earlier this week. Ava Brewster took sixth overall for the girls. North Allegheny defeated Butler’s boys, 20-41, and the girls, 15-48.

Butler’s girls defeated Shaler, 15-48. Shaler did not field a complete boys teams.

Griffith ran a 16:59 for the Tornado boys. Owen Dressler ran an 18:29, Zachary Slear 19:29, Jacob Fallecker 19:30 and Mark Collins 19:40. Brewster ran a 21:26 for the girls, Makayla McLister 23:18, Madison McGarrah 24:04, Maddalyn Semmler 24:27 and Aliyah Young 24:31.

Girls Soccer

Cecelia Wolford scored off an assist from Leah Weiland in Butler’s 1-0 victory over Allderdice.

Delaney Yaracs needed to make just one save to preserve the shutout for Butler (6-6, 5-5).

Karns City 4, Clarion 0 — Hanna Dailey scored two goals and added one assist for the Gremlins.

Lyrik Reed and Emma Dailey both added a goal in the victory.

Boys Soccer

Nick Kingerski and Hunter Berry both scored twice and added an assist in Slippery Rock’s 4-0 blanking of Conneaut Area.

Cole Kovacik contributed an assist and Connor Wallace stopped three shots for the Rockets (9-3-1, 5-0-1).

Freeport 5, Greensburg Salem 1 — The Yellowjackets (6-8, 6-6) received a goal from five different players — Garrett Risch, Isaac Wetzel, Zach Fairman, Vinny Porco and Angelo Porco.

Wetzel added a pair of assists and Ethan Rapp had seven saves in net.

Mars 4, Indiana 0 — Breiden Eagon tallied two goals for the Planets (8-6, 7-3) while Cade Coldiron and James Jayamohan both scored once.

Kaden Gratton earned the shutout in net.

Butler 2, Shaler 1 (2OT) — Cody Lubinsky ended this game with a goal on a penalty kick.

Nick Niebauer scored the Golden Tornado’s first goal off an assist by Lawson Neigh.

Butler improved to 10-3-2 overall and 6-3-2 in section play.

Shady Side Academy 5, Knoch 0 — The Knights (8-7, 8-4) lost to SSA for the second time this season.

Girls Volleyball

Despite another standout effort from Lexi Ruckdeschel, A-C Valley dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Cranberry.

Ruckdeschel tallied 14 kills, 13 digs and five blocks in the 23-25, 25-14, 23-25 and 15-25 loss.

Bella Ielase added nine kills and 19 digs, Mackenzie Parks four kills and 10 digs and Jenna Stefanacci 22 assists for the Falcons (7-5).

Pine-Richland 3, Butler 1 — The Golden Tornado won the first set, but ultimately fell to the Rams by scores of 25-23, 14-25, 17-25 and 14-25.

Audrey Lehman totaled seven kills and seven digs, Ava Plunkard had 22 assists and 15 digs and Brynn Morton added six kills.

Slippery Rock 3, Sharon 1 — The Rockets downed the Tigers by scores of 25-14, 25-23, 20-25 and 25-6. No other details were available.

Clarion-Limestone 3, Karns City 0 — Ava Fox tallied seven kills and

Jessica Dunn six kills in this 21-25, 18-25, 12-25 loss to the Lions.

Bethany Morrow chipped in five aces and four digs for the Gremlins.
