‘Marvelous Wonderettes’ a dreamy jukebox delight

Four bright stars make up the constellation cast of “The Marvelous Wonderettes" for the Musical Theatre Guild, and the show is worth your time and attention this weekend.

One can’t help but sing along to the tunes of this jukebox musical directed by Rob “Nation” Boothe, and musically directed by Jess Sanzotti. It captures a cheery group of girls performing at their senior prom in 1958, and their 10-year reunion.

The sets, costumes and songs all resemble a dreamy sock hop, catapulting you back in time. The classic girl-group choreography, created by Boothe, added to the authenticity of the time period portrayal and drew attention to the four girls’ killer harmonies, especially in “Mr. Sandman.”

The group of starlets played off each other’s distinct characters in all respects, from synchronized movements to asides with the audience.

Arie Danko, portraying Betty Jean, was the mischievous tomboy of the bunch. You found your eye drawn to her antics throughout the performance. Her powerhouse vocals were showcased in “Lipstick on Your Collar.”

Arie’s character pushed the buttons of nearly all the girls, none so much as Cindy Lou, the sassy and competitive best friend played by Machaela Danko, Arie Danko’s sister).

Machaela crooned “Son of a Preacher Man” and “Leader of the Pack” effortlessly, selling the sultry Cindy Lou as a songbird. Her character arc from one act to the next was a burden to carry, and Machaela’s portrayal solidified her place in the pack.

The Disney Princess pipes of Jules Leddy packed a serious punch in “Secret Love” and “You Don’t Own Me.” She played the organized, peacemaking friend Missy, and her portrayal held the group aloft through times of trouble.

Jaycie Wisor played a lovable, sweet, dreamy Suzy. Her comedic timing was as natural as the impressive scales and runs she delivered in “Stupid Cupid” and “Respect.” Though definitely one of the most dynamic roles of the show, Wisor’s Suzy could be counted on for a laugh at every turn.

On the whole, the cast made you want to get up and dance with them as they transform from sock-hop sweethearts to galloping go-go girls. The show was altogether engaging, energizing and a breath of fresh air for friends and music lovers of all ages. You won’t want the show to end; it will leave you swinging and swaying.
