Little Red School House open Saturday

The Little Red Schoolhouse on East Jefferson Street was the first school built as a result of the Common School Law of 1834, passed by legislators in Harrisburg. The law mandated that each county in Pennsylvania provide schools for its youth. The Little Red Schoolhouse is now owned by the Butler County Historical Society.

Anyone curious about education in the early to mid-1800s will have an opportunity on Saturday to tour and learn about Butler’s first one-room schoolhouse.

The General Richard Butler chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Little Red School House at 200 E. Jefferson St.

Donna Croft, DAR chapter regent, said the free event will apprise everyone of the process of a typical school day of yesteryear.

Steve Cicero, also known as the History Hobo, will speak at noon and again at 1 p.m. about the schoolhouse and local education in the 19th Century.

Jen Ford, executive director of the county Historical Society, will also answer questions about the schoolhouse.

The historical society owns the Little Red School House and is partnering with the DAR chapter for the event.

Light refreshments will be offered, and information on the DAR will be available outside the school during the event, Croft said.

“We are trying to get more involved in the community, so people are aware of what we do,” she said.

Croft said the DAR decided to host the event due to the group’s goal of historical preservation.

The local DAR chapter is considering applying for grants to fund repairs needed at the historic schoolhouse, she said.

“We’d like to preserve it for future generations as well,” Croft said.

She said the DAR chapter met at the schoolhouse many years ago.
