Honoring the fall standouts
Mr. Hubble may think trophies are for people with low self-esteem issues, like in that humorous insurance company commercial starring Packers’ quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but I think they are as cool as a Cheese Head hat.
I like to hand out my own, personal awards in several sports based on what I have seen and the information the Eagle has gathered throughout the fall.
There are many exceptional athletes in the county. They all should be proud.
But here are, in my opinion, the best of the best. And I doubt any of them have self-esteem problems.
Football Player of the Year.
The nominees are: Jordan Brown, Seneca Valley; Forrest Barnes, Seneca Valley; Josh Schultheis, Mars; and Ben Tackett, Knoch.
And the winner is: Jordan Brown.
Sure, the quarterback’s teammate at Seneca Valley, Forrest Barnes, won the Butler Eagle Scoring Trophy, but Brown is the dude who makes that Raiders’ offense purr.
Football Coach of the Year.
The nominees are: Clyde Conti, Butler; Dave Louder, Union; Ed Conto, Karns City; and Brendan Hathaway, Slippery Rock.
And the winner is: Dave Louder.
Last year, Louder led Union to the playoffs for the first time ever. This year, not much was expected from the Golden Knights and all they did was go out and win nine games and make the playoffs again.
Boys Soccer Player of the Year.
The nominees are: Spencer Posey, Mars; Evan McGarvey, Karns City; Anthony Crivelli, Seneca Valley; and Andrew Johnston, Karns City.
And the winner is: Spencer Posey.
Scoring goals in the WPIAL is hard. Posey made it look easy, finding the net 27 times this season.
Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
The nominees are: Breann Wood, Karns City; Emily LoPresti, Karns City; Harley Boyd, Slippery Rock; Krista Burdett, Knoch; and Beth Perri, Mars.
And the winner is: Breann Wood ... and Emily LoPresti.
These two were like Laverne and Shirley, like Cagney and Lacey, like Monica and Rachel.
They can’t be split up.
When one scored, the other often assisted on the goal.
Girls Volleyball Player of the Year.
The nominees are: Meredith Snyder, A-C Valley; Abby Matusik, Mars; Megan Little, Slippery Rock; and Zoe Pawlak, Freeport.
And the winner is: Abby Matusik.
Mars was blessed with quite the presence at the net this season, but Matusik was more than just a ferocious hitter.
She got her fair share of kills — the glamor stat in volleyball — but she also was a standout at, well, just about everything else.
Matusik could serve, block and dig with the best of them.
Congrats to all the winners. Sorry, no trophies. Maybe Mr. Hubble has them.
