Tornado facing major test Friday
BUTLER TWP — While playing each other, Westinghouse and Butler hope to learn a lot about themselves.
The Golden Tornado (3-2) host the unbeaten Bulldogs (4-0) for homecoming at 7 p.m. Friday at Art Bernardi Stadium.
“This is a great test for us, to see where we're at,” Butler coach Eric Christy said. “That team is loaded with athleticism.
“They've been putting a ton of points on the board and haven't been allowing very many.”
Entering a rare Monday night high school game against USO (University Prep/Sci-Tech/Obama Academy), Westinghouse had outscored its opponents 170-24. The Bulldogs own wins over Seton LaSalle (38-0), Brashear (35-0), Allderdice (41-12) and Union Local, Ohio (56-12).
Westinghouse is two-time defending Pittsburgh City League champion “and we're hoping to make it three,” third-year head coach Donta Green said.
“We've played teams that have outstanding individual players, but maybe not a lot of depth that way,” Green added. “Butler is a disciplined team that can do a lot of things. They will be a challenge for us.”
And the Bulldogs will be playing the Tornado in a quick turnaround. Westinghouse was originally scheduled to play USO last Thursday.
“They couldn't play that night because of a COVID issue,” Green said. “They're OK to play now (Monday), so we're doing it. Coming back to play this Friday is within the legal guidelines.
“The key for us right now is to not get anybody hurt.”
While Butler quarterback Mac Schnur has thrown for 848 yards, completing 51 of 100 passses, Westinghouse has a standout QB of its own. Keyshawn Morsillo, a 6-foot-3 junior, has thrown for over 100 yards in every game this season. He threw for over 200 last week.
Morsillo is being recruited by Mid-American Conference schools. Senior running back Malik Harris has been held below 100 yards only once — gaining 92 that night — and has rushed for approximately 575 yards this season.
“Keyshawn scrambles around a lot, but he's looking to throw while he does,” Green said. “If nothing's there, he's not afraid to pull it down and run with it.”
Kairon Collins and Taymir Oneal are among the Bulldogs' top receivers.
“Their quarterback and running back get all the publicity, but they've got a bunch of guys who can hurt you,” Christy said.
Defensively, middle linebacker Roderick Jeter and safety Davon Fennell anchor a veteran unit for Westinghouse.
Butler junior center Markeis Frazier, a two-year starter at that position, was named the Golden Tornado's Offensive Lineman of the Week by the coaches. Butler is coming off a 56-6 win over Harbor Creek, the Tornado's largest margin of victory in 43 years.
“Markeis played his most complete game in two years Friday,” Christy said.
Cooper Baxter returned to the Tornado lineup at linebacker last week and will start there again. He will also see time on the offensive side of the ball.
Baxter continues to be Butler's leading rusher with 280 yards on the ground, though Landon Lacey (195 yards) and David Graef, both sophomores, have picked up much of that slack. Lance Slater rushed for 100 yards on just four carries against Harbor Creek.
“Landon and David are unselfish players who would run through a wall for you,” Christy said. “They're the type of kids we want in this program.”
Ethan Trettel has 17 catches for 325 yards, Slater 15 for 296 for Butler. Both are averaging 18 yards per catch.
Butler has been scoring and moving the ball rapidly with a lot of big plays.
“We've been losing the time of possession battle in recent weeks, but that's OK as long as we keep scoring at the end of those possessions,” Christy said.
Defensively, JunJun Andrada leads the Tornado with 34 tackles. Ethan Babay has 25 solo stops, including eight tackles for loss.
“We've been getting contributions from a lot of kids on both sides of the ball,” Christy said. “That may make it difficult for Westinghouse to decide who to key on and try to take away.”
