MTG premieres ’50s, ’60s jukebox musical
Four high school students who start a doo-wop group are the protagonists of the Musical Theatre Guild’s first show of the season.
“The Marvelous Wonderettes,” by Roger Bean, is a musical comedy full of heart and classic songs from the ‘50s and ‘60s, according to Robert “Nation” Boothe, director and choreographer.
“These four ladies form a group to perform at their high school prom, and the second act follows them 10 years later,” he said. “It’s about their relationships, friendships, and having that told through song.”
The show stars Arie and Machaela Danko, Jules Leddy and Jaycie Wisor.
Wisor said it’s her first show with the guild, and she has enjoyed getting to know the community during the rehearsal process.
“Everyone’s been so welcoming and so encouraging,” she said.
Portraying her character, Suzy, has been a new experience compared to her past roles, Wisor said.
“Suzy is definitely the most child-like, some would describe her as ditzy,” Wisor said. “She has a distinct innocence about her — she’s funny and she doesn’t try to be. It’s definitely been fun to be that funny.”
Arie Danko said “Wonderettes” has been a time of bonding for her and her sister, Machaela.
“We play best friends. I’m Betty Jean, and she’s Cindy Lou,” Arie said of their characters. “I’m the tomboy — very class clown, boyish, always messing with everyone, and people are always yelling at me.”
The relationships between cast members has grown significantly since the first day, Boothe said.
“They seem to laugh a lot, joke a lot, have a good time,” he said.
Both Arie Danko and Wisor said the show ultimately is a comedy about relationships and has songs most generations have heard.
“Keep your friends close, no matter what happens in life,” Arie said. “That’s what it’s about.
“I showed my grandma the song list, and she knew them all,” Wisor said. “I hope people are singing along; I hope everyone has fun.”
Boothe added that the show is full of lighthearted energy, which will leave audiences tapping their toes.
“(The show is) heavy in choreography ... It blends in with the direction. I think it’s all about seeing the amazing talent, the bright sets, the costumes and all these fun songs,” he said. “(People) will leave with a very good feeling, like they’ve stepped back in time.”
