Floyd Emanuel Rettig
Floyd Emanuel Rettig, 86, of Butler passed away Saturday among family and the caring staff of the VNA Inpatient Hospice.
A life-long resident of Butler, he was born on July 1, 1926, to the late Charles A. Rettig and Mary (Protzman) Rettig.
Floyd served in the Army during World War II with the 282nd Engineer Combat Battalion in the European Theater.
After returning home, he married his childhood sweetheart, Virginia “Ginny” Williams, on Aug. 1, 1947.
Floyd provided for his wife and four children through his work as an electrician. He worked for V.J. Laughlin for 17 years, and then spent 28 years with the Fuellgraf Electric Co., until his retirement in 1988. During this time, he earned the nickname “Mr. Main Street,” as he could often be found near Main Street in Butler, fixing traffic lights and illuminating businesses with his electrical skills, ever-present smile and sense of humor.
Floyd was a member of the St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he attended the Homebuilders Sunday School Class. He was a member of the IBEW Local unions 10 and 5, and a charter member of the Buco Trailer Club, where he made good use of his signature practical jokes. Floyd also enjoyed playing cards, working in his garage and watching the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Floyd set a wonderful example for his family as a dedicated husband, father and grandfather. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 65 years, Virginia (Williams) Rettig, who devoted her life, especially the past few years, to his care; four children and their spouses, Phyllis (Jerry) Kaltenbaugh, Leroy (June) Rettig, Karen (Barry) Blum and Dennis (Joan) Rettig, all of Butler; six grandchildren, Kristina Edwards, Casey (Ryan) Meisberger, Cortney (Michael) Graham, Garrett Rettig, Benjamin Rettig and Jacob Rettig; three great-grandchildren, Jodice, Mackenzi and Lloyd Edwards; seven step-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Violet Rettig and Zetta Pistorius, both of Butler, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Floyd joins his parents and five older siblings in heaven.
