Grove City College football falls to Presidents
GROVE CITY — The Grove City College football team suffered a 40-19 setback to Washington & Jefferson College in a mutual Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener on Saturday night at Robert E. Thorn Field.
The Presidents (2-1, 1-0) jumped out to a 14-0 lead, before Butler grad and GCC wingback Zach Rader tossed a 56-yard touchdown to Khalil Ervin on an option pass with 11:19 remaining in the first half.
However, W&J stretched the lead to 21-6 before the half and Dion Wiegand scored his fourth and fifth touchdowns of the game in the third quarter to give the Presidents complete control. Wiegand finished with 172 yards on 24 carries.
The Wolverines (2-1, 0-1) will visit Bethany on Saturday at 2 p.m.
Women’s SoccerSlippery Rock University picked up a nonconference road win on Saturday with a 1-0 decision over Davis & Elkins.Freshman Dara Demich scored off an assist from Cailin Conner early in the first half and the SRU defense made it hold up.The Rock (3-1-1) finished with a 13-2 advantage in shots, 7-2 in shots on goal and 5-1 in corner kicks.
Men’s SoccerSlippery Rock University endured a 3-2 loss to Seton Hill on Saturday in PSAC play.Seton Hill (4-1, 3-0) scored two second-half goals, including a penalty kick, to secure the win.Dom Francis found the back of the net on a penalty kick for SRU (3-1-1, 0-1) in the 38th minute before Mike Pcholinsky chipped a shot over the goalie’s head just 42 seconds later to give The Rock a 2-1 edge.
Women’s VolleyballSlippery Rock University dropped matches to West Liberty and Charleston at the Wheeling Jesuit Tournament on Saturday.West Liberty outlasted SRU (5-7) in five sets by scores of 25-14, 18-25, 19-15, 25-22 and 15-8. It also took Charleston five games — 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 18-25, 18-16 — to hold off The Rock.
Men’s Cross CountrySlippery Rock University finished in a tie for second among 15 teams at the Lock Haven Invitational on Saturday.Lock Haven — ranked No. 14 in Division II — won the team title with 21 points, while SRU and Carnegie Mellon finished with 93.SRU’s Morgan Elliott took seventh place on the 8,000-meter course with a time of 25:24. Butler grad Chris Grooms finished 19th at 25:56, while Michael Beegle (21st, 25:88), Alex Koksal (24th, 26:00) and Jaron Martin (28th, 26:03) rounded out The Rock’s top-five finishers.Slippery Rock High grad Ryan Thompson was 50th in the 244-runner field at 26:30.
Women’s Cross CountrySlippery Rock University placed fourth out of 16 teams at the Lock Haven Invitational on Saturday.Marywood and Mansfield tied for the team title at 87 points, the Penn State cross country club was third with 91 and SRU finished with 119 points.Kara Styles was SRU’s top finisher with a seventh-place showing at 22:12. Jenny Picot (20th, 22:43), Karly Knechtel (26th, 23:01), Sarah Wirth (32nd, 23:13) and Brittany Fagan (34th, 23:16) were The Rock’s top five performers.Butler grad Alexis Swiergol was SRU’s sixth finisher at 40th place in the 230-runner field with a time of 23:30.
Field HockeySlippery Rock University dropped to 3-3 on the season with a 4-0 loss to No. 3 Millersville on Saturday in The Rock’s second consecutive game against a nationally-ranked opponent.SRU upset No. 7 Bloomsburg on Wednesday, but could not make it two in a row against the undefeated Marauders (5-0).
