5 golfers advance to WPIAL Championships

Five Butler County golfers advanced to the WPIAL Class 3A championship round Tuesday during first-round boys golf action at Champion Lakes in Ligonier.

Butler’s Hunter Swidzinski is tied for fourth place after carding a 3-over-par 74. Mars’ Blake Bertolo, who had a hole-in-one during his round, shot a 76 to tie for ninth. The Planets’ Ryan Steigerwald shot a 79 to tie for 14th.

Will Campbell of Mars and Wyatt Kos of Butler both shot an 82 to tie for 26th. The top 36 golfers and ties qualify for the championship round Oct. 6 at Allegheny Country Club.

Boys Soccer

Mason Nebel netted three goals as Knoch shut out Freeport, 5-0. Cabeb Oskin added a goal and assist, Sam Caldwell a goal. Oskin has 19 goals on the season.

The Knights host Jeannette Thursday.

Girls Soccer

North Catholic improved to 7-1 overall, 6-0 in section play by knocking off defending WPIAL champion Avonworth (9-2), 3-0, Monday.

Simone Sharpless had two goals and an assist for the Trojanettes while Lauren McDonald added a goal and assist. Rylee Kumer made 11 saves in goal to get the shutout.

North Catholic hosts Ambridge on Wednesday.

Karns City 4, Forest 1 — Lyrik Reed scored two goals for the Gremlins. McKenna Martin and Emma Dailey had a goal and assist each. Karns City is 8-3 on the season.

Knoch 0, Burrell 0 — The Knights and Bucs played to a scoreless draw after 100 minutes Monday. The tie keeps Knoch in second place in its section.

Cross Country

Both Slippery Rock teams improved to 2-1 with wins over Sharpsville. The Rocket girls claimed an 18-41 win while the boys scored a 26-30 victory. Tessa Szymanski and Viktor Zahn were individual overall winners for Slippery Rock.

The Rockets host Hickory next Tuesday.

Girls Volleyball

Audrey Lehman had eight kills, four aces and four digs Tuesday night as Butler defeated Gateway, 3-0. March scores were 25-23, 25-19, 25-19.

Sarah Szebalskie tallied seven kills and two digs, Brynn Cornibe six kills and two blocks for the Golden Tornado (5-4). Butler plays at Canon-McMillan Thursday.

Keystone 3, A-C Valley 0 — The Falcons (6-3) lost by scores 25-23, 25-23, 25-14. Lexi Ruckdeschel had 10 kills and 10 digs, Mackenzie Parks five kills and 16 digs, Bella Ielease three kills and 10 digs, Jenna Stefanacci 15 digs.

A-C Valley plays Thursday at Union.

Clarion-Limestone 3, Moniteau 2 — Davina Pry tallied three aces, five blocks and six kills for the Warriors in defeat. Match scores were 21-25, 26-24, 27-25, 16-25, 15-8.

Sydney Bayliss had four blocks and three kills, Sophia Tennent an ace, block and four kills, Allie Pry two aces, eight digs and two kills for Moniteau.

Freeport 3, Burrell 0 — The Yellowjackets (7-0, 8-0) stayed unbeaten with this 25-17, 25-10, 25-11 win. Hadley Heltren had eight kills and two blocks for Freeport.

Josie Russo contributed six kills, Cassidy Dell seven service points and five kills, Alaina Whitlinger 16 service points and five kills. Freeport hosts Seneca Valley Wednesday night.
