Woman gets 3 to 6 months in drug case

A West Liberty woman who bought heroin for her brother — who later gave some to a 21-year-old woman who died — was sentenced Thursday.

Amanda Emery, 30, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to deliver drugs. She was sentenced by Butler County Judge William Shaffer to serve 3 to 6 months in prison and three years of probation.

According to court records, Emery in February 2014 reportedly bought 29 stamp bags of heroin in Pittsburgh.

Those drugs were for her brother, Shayne Emery.

Shayne Emery later sold some of the drugs to 21-year-old Brittany Lee Hays of Worth Township.

The next day, Hays died on an overdose at her home.

Four of the bags of heroin involved, according to court records, were marked “Theraflu” in red ink.

“Theraflu” was one of the street names used for heroin laced with the powerful synthetic painkiller fentanyl that was blamed last year for more than 20 fatal overdoses in Western Pennsylvania.

Shayne Emery, 31, pleaded to a felony count of drug delivery resulting in death. He was sentenced last month to serve 4 to 15 years in prison.
