With 34 drug overdose deaths in 2014, Butler County is ranked in the top 20 among counties in the state for drug deaths, but it is not near the top of the list.

Of the state’s 67 counties, Butler is tied for roughly 16th place in the number of drug deaths with Lackawanna County, according to a study published Tuesday by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

Allegheny County had the most deaths in the region surrounding Butler, with 307, followed by Westmoreland County with 88 deaths. Lawrence County had 18, Armstrong County had 14, Clarion County had five and Mercer County had one.

No information was available for Beaver and Venango counties.

Statewide, Philadelphia County had the most overdose deaths with 655 with Allegheny County second.

Four counties — Cameron, Forest, Potter and Snyder — had no overdose deaths.

In the state, heroin was the drug involved in the most deaths, being found in almost 52 percent of people. In Butler and its surrounding counties, heroin was the top drug, according to the study.

Of the 34 who died in Butler, 15 people were found to have heroin in their body and eight people had clonazepam, which is a drug used to treat seizures and panic disorders, in their system.

Males made up 20 of the deaths and females were 14. Eight were between the ages of 18 and 30, 11 were between 31 and 45, 13 were between 46 and 60, and there were two drug deaths involving people older than 61.

All of those who died were white.
