BUTLER TWP — On a night when former Butler swimmer Eric Namesnik was remembered, the Golden Tornado boys team certainly took it to heart.
Namesnik, a two-time Olympic silver medalist, died Wednesday in Michigan after injuries sustained in a car accident last Saturday.
Butler turned in an inspired performance, downing North Hills 97-89, while the girls team dropped a tight 96-90 decision.
"Some of these kids started swimming because of him," said Butler coach Jeff Armstrong. "They considered him like a big brother figure.
"The guys tried to pull one off tonight and did. I'm glad to see them get their first win," Armstrong added.
A big key for the Tornado boys team was grabbing the top three places in the 10-meter diving competition. John Rhodaberger won with a score of 226.10, which included one judge's score of a perfect 8.0, ahead of Jake Pflugh and Patrick Kaiser.
Matt Galante won the 100 freestyle (51.50 seconds) and 200 freestyle (1:52.70) while Patrick O'Toole won the 100 individual medley (2:09.34) and the 500 freestyle (5:06.38).
Clif McKee was the Tornado boys' only other winner, clocking a 1:02.57 in the 100 backstroke.
"We had a lot of help from our unsung heroes, like Travis Clouse, Clif McKee, who had a three-second drop in the 100 back, and Jason Clouse," Armstrong noted.
In the girls meet, Brittany Vogel (200 freestyle, 2:04.06; 500 freestyle, 5:36.13), Molly Evans (200 IM, 2:14.09; 100 backstroke, 1:01.46) and Sarah Clouse (100 fly, 1:03.05; 100 breaststroke, 1:10.61) each won two events.
Jessica Schnur was the squad's other victor, winning the diving event with 235.30 points, while teammates Stephanie Kello and Jana Lee Skiles also performed well.Jessica Vernon and Ellen Crummy keyed victories in the 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays, while Evans, Vogel and Clouse contributed to one relay win."Molly Evans is going to win events and Jessica Vernon had an outstanding meet (Thursday)," said Armstrong.Vernon and Crummy (200 IM) made the WPIAL cut, but the Tornado is still a bit lacking in one area."Our freestyle is not strong for boys or girls," said Armstrong. "We just don't have that, and we have to make up for that in the breaststroke, the backstroke …"(North Hills) just had more depth than we did," he added.Notes:A trust fund has been set up for Namesnik's two children, ages 5 and 2.
