Freeport surge too late?
After moving up the Allegheny Conference standings following wins against West Shamokin (59-12) and Deer Lakes (61-0), Freeport will get its first break from conference play with a 7:30 p.m. game against visiting Union-New Castle Friday.
The Scotties (1-6) ended a 16-game losing streak with a 26-20 win over Cornell last week, but Yellowjackets coach Bill Dillen is wary of the team.
"They have three nice skill players," said Dillen, referring to quarterback Mike Pelto and wideouts Linnell Robinson and Markus Allen, who both have seen time in the backfield.
"Pelto is a nice leader, from what I've seen on film. He's not a bad runner. We'll have to keep our eye out for that. We'll have to keep our eye on all of them," Dillen added.
Pelto passed for 146 yards and two touchdowns, one each to Robinson and Allen. The duo each rushed for a touchdown as well.
The Yellowjackets (4-3) rolled to the conference win against the Lancers, jumping out to a 26-0 lead after the first quarter and 40-0 at the break.
Brian Zimmerman passed for 187 yards and three touchdowns while eight different Yellowjackets players found the end zone, including Brady Sherrieb, who scored a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Northwestern (3-4, 1-3) at Grove City (4-3, 3-1), 7 p.m., Friday — The Grove City High School football team is — excuse the pun — like a box of chocolates."Like I said, you never know what you are going to get," said Grove City coach Jeff Bell. When he isn't quoting Forrest Gump, he's getting his football team ready for its next opponent.Unfortunately for Bell, he hasn't gotten a firm grasp on which Eagles' team is going to show up from week to week. When Grove City hosts Northwestern on senior night, he's hoping the team that beat Reynolds 33-0, Hickory 14-6 and Sharon 44-25 arrives at Forker Field. And not the one that lost to Corry (12-0) and Fairview (26-13)."Hopefully, we're learning," Bell said. "Ithink the situation we're in, we can't afford to lose a game."That sense of urgency tends to fire up a team, as it did Friday against the previously unbeaten Tigers.Grove City took control early and rolled to a huge road win over Sharon.Chris Clark rolled up more than 150 yards rushing and the offense put up 328 yards on the ground. But Grove City will face a stiff test in Northwestern, a team that is in desperation mode. The Eagles will have to find a way to contain dangerous Northwestern quarterback Cody Cipalla, who rushed for 200 yards in a 35-28 loss to Greenville last week. The option quarterback is also a threat to throw the ball."He's elusive, athletic and probably the best player in the conference," Bell said. "He's a challenge."To combat him, Bell plans to play a basic defense that stresses discipline above all else."You have to play assignment football," Bell said. "We want to stay pretty basic and play with intensity like we did last week. I think our defense is up to the challenge."
Union (2-5, 1-4) at Clarion-Limestone (1-6, 1-5), 7:30 p.m., Friday — For the second time this season, Union enters a game as the favorite. The last time was against A-CValley and the Knights responed with a 23-20 victory.Last week, Union struggled offensively against Lakeview in a 34-0 loss. But this isn't your brother's Union team. With a talented backfield featuring Colby Davis and Nate Boltz, the Knights have put together solid showings in nearly every game. This isn't your brother's Clarion-Limestone, either. Lions' coach Todd Smith has had to endure a difficult season due to injuries and off-the-field issues.Clarion-Limestone, once a KSAC power, has had to forfeit two games and has been outscored 214-26 in its four other losses. Its lone win was a 14-6 triumph over winless A-C Valley.
