Freeport runs over Scotties

FREEPORT — Steady rain throughout the day made for a muddy field at Swartz Stadium on Friday.

It didn't bother Freeport.

The Yellowjackets (5-3) recorded 370 yards of offense on their way to a 46-0 pasting of Union-New Castle in nonconference action.

The shutout was the second straight for Freeport.

"They're playing very well. I'm real proud of them," Freeport coach Bill Dillen said of the defense. "We've played well the last three or four weeks."

You could say that. Union (1-7) was simply next in line for a Yellowjackets squad that has outscored its last three opponents 166-12.

"Well, they held us scoreless, so I guess (Freeport has) a pretty good defense," Union coach Stacy Robinson said. "The conditions just aren't conducive to what we do on offense."

The other side of that argument finds Freeport enjoying the rain and mud.

The Yellowjackets built a 12-0 lead, courtesy of a 28-yard Matt Caripolti run and a 45-yard pass from Brian Zimmerman to Nate Kotecki, after the first quarter.

The Scotties saw a lot more of Zimmerman as the 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior collected 151 passing yards.

Zimmerman hit Caripolti on a 6-yard touchdown just before halftime and found Josh Schreckengost for a 56-yard strike nine seconds into the fourth quarter, giving Freeport, which travels to Ford City next week, a 39-0 lead.

"We knew (Union) would be loading the box up," Zimmerman said. "We've been running the ball real well the last couple of games, so we figured a couple play-action passes would be wide open, and they were."

Union's air attack never found its rhythm, as Mike Pelto finished 7-for-19 with two interceptions, the last of which Freeport linebacker Chris Ittner returned 33 yards for the game's final score.
