SRU field hockey makes playoffs

Gabrielle Malishchak’s goal two minutes into overtime lifted the Slippery Rock University women’s field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Indiana (Pa.) Saturday.

With the win, The Rock (6-12, 5-5) clinches its first playoff berth since 1987.

Rebecca Coleman scored SRU’s first goal and Courtney Lee made five saves in net.

Women’s VolleyballDespite 16 kills from junior Sarah Cadwallader, SRU (19-8, 8-7) suffered a 3-1 defeat to Gannon by scores of 25-21, 25-19, 19-25 and 25-22.

Men’s SoccerAlex Swartz, Austin Pierce and Chris Hall each scored a goal to help SRU to a 3-1 win over Gannon.Clayton Master made six saves for The Rock (7-7-1, 3-5).

Women’s SoccerKara Mullins’ goal was all The Rock (12-3-2, 9-2-2) needed in a 1-0 win over Gannon.Butler High graduate Lisa Rodgers helped SRU tally its ninth straight shutout, making five saves in net.

Cross-CountryTravis Arrigoni (ninth), Morgan Elliott (15th) and Alex Koksal (18th) all placed in the top 20 to earn All-PSAC honors and help SRU’s men’s team to a fifth-place finish at the conference championships at Lock Haven University.In the women’s competition, The Rock was sixth, led by Stephanie Case’s All-PSAC finish of seventh overall.

FootballBlaine Miller scored a pair of touchdowns on the ground (2, 9) and quarterback Brian Pell completed 16 of 23 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown as Grove City College picked up its first win of 2011, knocking off visiting Saint Vincent 21-16 Saturday afternoon.Anthony Ritchie, who led the Wolverines with six catches for 75 yards, caught a 17-yard scoring aerial from Pell late in the second quarter to give his team a 13-7 lead at halftime.Grove City (1-6, 1-4) hosts Washington & Jefferson Saturday.
