SRU restrooms converted for all
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University said Wednesday that it had converted more than 70 single-occupancy restrooms to all-gender restrooms, in what officials said was a “continuing effort to extend its commitment to diversity, equality and inclusion.”
The restrooms, which are marked with “all-gender restroom” signs, are in 35 campus buildings, the university said. Each restroom is a lockable, single-stall facility and is ADA accessible.
Holly McCoy, SRU's assistant vice president for diversity and equal opportunity, as well as its Title IX coordinator, said the move makes SRU “a more welcoming place for transgender persons.”
“They no longer have to think about whether or not they can safely use the restroom of their choice, they just can,” McCoy said. “It shows that while we still have a lot of work to do, we have taken a step forward for transgender individuals on our campus.”
She said the bathrooms selected for conversion were chosen to provide the best coverage throughout the majority of the campus' buildings, and that SRU was continuing to review adding more in the future.
Officials from Grove City College had not responded to a request for information regarding the schools' policy on transgender individuals and bathroom use as of press time today.
