A Butler city council member was ticketed by police for allegedly running over a fire hose during the fire Sunday on Center Avenue.

Kathy D. Kline, 63, of Wayne Street was issued a summary citation for driving over a fire hose with her Jeep by Lt. John Johnson of the city police.

The citation reads, “The defendant did drive over an unprotected fire hose at the scene of a fire without the proper authorization.”

The fine is $25, but the citation also carries multiple surcharges and reimbursements that add up to $135.

Kline, who is the director of public safety for the city, said in an interview that she was looking for a parking spot near Capitol Cleaners and never saw the hose, which was not charged with water.

“It was an embarrassing accident, plain and simple,” she said.

Kline said the hose was not damaged. “I understand the seriousness of that and why it is a citation,” she said.

As public safety director, she had to get hold of the city’s code enforcement officer and help make arrangements for the building to be torn down after the fire department reported that it could be at risk of collapsing.

Kline said Thursday that she had yet to receive a summons and did not know how she would plead.
